Distributed Energy Generation
Diversification of energy resources is important and will be achieved through a combination of effective procurement actions for energy supply and embracing technologies that expand the types of energy sources on each installation. Distributed energy generation is included in this mix of resources and will be evaluated by the Army for on-site electricity and heat generation.
Distributed generation includes:
- microturbines,
- fuel cells,
- combined heat and power, and
- renewable technologies.
These technologies are selectively applied when determined to be life-cycle cost effective or to provide flexibility and security to mitigate unacceptable risk to critical facilities or for force protection. The Army is actively engaged in the demonstration of distributed generation technologies through programs undertaken by ERDC/CERL and closely follows the distributed energy program of the U.S Department of Energy.
