Alternative Fuel Vehicles
The Army is implementing a Secretary of the Army initiative to replace 4,000 combustion GSA-leased vehicles with low-speed electric vehicles and is:
- Eliminating Class IV or large vehicles (e.g., Suburban, Yukon, Crown Victoria)
- Downsizing Class III SUVs, if not law enforcement or fire and emergency services, during annual GSA vehicle replacement cycle
Ongoing efforts are to transition the non-tactical fleet to hybrid, plug-in hybrids and all electric vehicles as the technology becomes economically feasible. Plans are to replace 300-400 GSA-leased fossil fuel vehicles each year until 2016. These activities should result in meeting the requirements of EO 13514 for fossil fuel reductions by 2020 by 2016, four years early.
The following requirements are being maximized when vehicles are leased by GSA for the Army:
- Highest rating GHG emission reductions
- E-85 vehicles will only be located where E-85 fuel is available and all E-85 vehicles will utilize the fuel exclusively, and
- Highest MPG available on the market.
