Community Health Promotion Council

Community Health Promotion Council

United States Army Japan’s (USARJ) Community Health Promotion Council (CHPC) is the commanding general’s forum to promote the health and resilience of USARJ’s total Army team of Soldiers, civilian employees, family members and retirees throughout Japan.

The CHPC supports the Army Ready and Resilient Campaign (R2C) that links personal resilience to Army readiness and emphasizes the responsibility of people at all levels to build and maintain resilience. The CHPC works to unite and involve USARJ’s prevention, health and holistic programs leaders, and community members to address the health and resilience needs of our community.

Goals of the CHPC are to improve community awareness of health and resilience resources and to ensure that all health and resilience programs work together on significant issues such as suicide, substance abuse, financial problems, and marital problems.

The CHPC is made up of an executive council that is chaired by the senior commander, a board of directors, and six work groups:

  1. Behavioral Health Work Group -- focuses on improving health and resilience by helping our community develop skills to approach life's challenges in a positive, optimistic way by demonstrating self-control, stamina and good character with our choices and actions.
  2. Community Health Work Group -- focuses on improving health and resilience helping our community develop skills that support safe family units that are supportive and loving, and provide the resources needed for all members of the family to live in a healthy and secure environment.
  3. Physical Health Work Group -- focuses on improving health and resilience through community engagement in physical activities and healthy Performance Triad (exercise, nutrition and sleep) behaviors.
  4. Social-Environmental Work Group -- focuses on improving health and resilience by helping our community develop skills to grow strong, trusting and valued relationships and friendships that are personally fulfilling and foster good communication including a comfortable exchange of ideas, views and experiences.
  5. Spiritual Health Work Group -- focuses on improving health and resilience by helping our community strengthen positive personal beliefs, principles and values that sustain us beyond family, institutional and social sources of strength.
  6. Okinawa Community Health Promotion Team -- focuses on improving behavioral, physical, spiritual, social and community health and resilience of our total Army team on the island of Okinawa.

USARJ’s Health Promotion Officer facilitates the CHPC’s processes.
