Greetings!
On behalf of U.S. Army Garrison Italy Darby Military Community,
it is an honor for us to welcome you to Camp Darby and the Livorno Military
Community. I suggest you spend some time visiting the Tuscany Region
of Italy, an area that is rich in both history and culture. I am sure you
will enjoy and appreciate the beauty and diversity of the Italian culture
and art. Nearby is one of the Wonders of the World, the Leaning Tower of
Pisa, as well as the beach resort town of Tirrenia, which forms the
southern reaches of the Italian Riviera.
This military complex between Pisa and Livorno was formally dedicated
on November 15, 1952 and was named Camp Darby in memory of
Brigadier General William O. Darby, Assistant Division Commander of
the 10th Mountain Division, who was killed by enemy artillery on 30
April 1945 on the shore of Lake Garda, Italy. Our main square is
dedicated to the memory of Pvt. “Curly” Nakae, a
great American Soldier who fought during WWII in the vicinity of Pisa
with the 442nd Regimental Combat Team and the 100th Infantry
Battalion (Separate). He was awarded the Medal of Honor for
his heroic acts.
Camp Darby is not only a great place to visit; it is a
great place to live. This web site contains some general information
about what U.S. Army Garrison Italy offers and its surrounding area.
We wish you a pleasant stay at Camp Darby and hope that you will use
Camp Darby as a "springboard" to many exciting and
interesting experiences. Best wishes for a safe, productive and
enjoyable visit.
Sincerely
DAVID J. LEINBERGER
Deputy Garrison Manager
