Command Sergeant Major Rathe S. Thompson is a native of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He entered the active United States Army in October, 1991. He completed Basic Training and Advance Individual Training as a Carpentry Masonry Specialist (12W) at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.

Command Sgt. Maj. Thompson has served with the 84th Engineer Battalion, 864th Engineer Battalion, United States Army Engineer Center, 410th Base Support Battalion, United States Army Corps of Engineers-Contingency Response Unit, 3/345 Training Support Battalion, 62nd Engineer Battalion (OEF 07-09), Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, III Corps, and the 21st Theater Sustainment Command.

His duty and leadership positions include Squad Leader, Platoon Sergeant, Trainer Developer/Writer, AC/RC Advisor, Operations Sergeant, First Sergeant, and G3 Training and Exercises Sergeant Major.

Command Sgt. Maj. Thompson is a graduate of the United States Army Sergeants Major Academy (Class 63) and has completed all levels of the Noncommissioned Officer Education System. He has also completed the Battle Staff NCO Course, First Sergeants Course, Equal Opportunity Leaders Course, National Training Center Combat Observer Course, and Air Assault School. His civilian education includes a Bachelor of Science Degree in History from the University of Wisconsin-Parkside.

Command Sgt. Maj. Thompson’s awards include the Bronze Star Medal , the Meritorious Service Medal (6 OLC), Army Commendation Medal (3 OLC), Army Achievement Medal (5 OLC), Army Good Conduct Medal (7th award), National Defense Ribbon (bronze service star), Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Humanitarian Medal, NCO Professional Development Ribbon (4), Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon (3), Army Meritorious Unit Commendation, Combat Action Badge, and Air Assault Badge. CSM Thompson is also a recipient of the Army Engineer Association's prestigious de Fleury Medal.
