Belvoir's Pence Gate to Close for Six Weeks Starting Oct. 2
(Stock photo)
FORT BELVOIR, Va. (Sept. 28, 2016) -- Fort Belvoir will close its Pence Gate for six weeks beginning Oct. 2 at 9 p.m. to facilitate the Route 1 widening project. Pence Gate is Fort Belvoir’s access control point closest to Fort Belvoir Community Hospital.
During the duration of the Pence Gate closure, Fort Belvoir’s Tulley Gate, which is located south of Pence on Route 1, will become Fort Belvoir’s 24-hour access control point. Due to this, drivers may notice additional traffic at Tulley Gate.
To avoid the potential increased traffic at Tulley Gate, it is recommended that drivers who approach Fort Belvoir from the south use Telegraph Road to the Fairfax County Parkway and enter the installation through Kingman Gate. An additional option is to continue up Fairfax County Parkway to Telegraph Gate, sometimes referred to as Beulah Gate.
Drivers who approach Fort Belvoir from the north are asked to use Walker Gate, which is located off of George Washington Memorial Highway. An additional option is to turn right onto Jeff Todd Way from Route 1, then left onto Telegraph Road, which brings drivers to Telegraph Gate.
As Tulley Gate becomes Fort Belvoir’s temporary 24-hour gate, officials have reconfigured entrance lanes to allow for more incoming lanes during morning rush and fewer outgoing lanes at the access control point.
Drivers are asked to be patient, expect delays, consider traveling at non-peak times and adjust their routes during Pence Gate’s closure.
