Illegitimate Children


Procedures to follow to obtain a new identification card for an illegitimate child:

1. A single (male) Soldier must provide the following:

  • Court order that establishes paternity or a voluntary acknowledgement of paternity or approved dependency and residency determination
  • Child’s birth certificate
  • Original Social security card (if the child is over 2 months old)

2. A single (female) Soldier must provide the following:

  • Child’s birth certificate or confirmation of birth
  • Social security card if available

Note: All voluntary acknowledgements of paternity must be notarized and original to have the child added to DEERS. Voluntary acknowledgement of paternity must be completed in the state where the mother and child reside. This applies to Army Soldiers; requirements differ for other branches of service.
