Weigh to Live (WTL)

Active person at the ocean with her arms raised in victory.

Eligibility: Available to active duty soldiers, their family members, and retirees. Teenage dependents are eligible when accompanied by parent(s).

Phase I consists of three consecutive medical appointments and additional optional fitness classes. Fitness classes are available on a first come first serve basis by walk–in.

  • Phase I – Initial Weigh to Live (WTL) Assessment consists of screening for coronary artery disease (CAD) using ACSM Risk Stratification, blood pressure, body composition, and body circumferences. Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR), Sub maximal VO2, and Functional Movement Screens (FMS) are measured. RMR is the daily amount of calories burned at rest to maintain vital body functions. Submaximal VO2 is a measure of cardio–respiratory fitness, and measures the patient's capacity to transport and use oxygen in the body. It is measured to evaluate the patient's fitness level and predict performance in endurance activities. FMS is a screening tool used to predict and prevent injuries from daily activity and exercise. Corrective exercises are prescribed based on weaknesses identified in the FMS to strengthen soldier readiness.
  • Phase II – Advanced WTL Nutritional Assessment and Phase II Class Registration: Patients are booked for a 90 minute GROUP appointment. Classes are offered four times per month. During class, patients complete an advanced assessment questionnaire. Patient's current fasting glucose and lipid panel results are provided and normal values are discussed. Patients are taught how lifestyle modifications can improve these results and referred to their PCM as appropriate. Each person is individually assessed to choose the appropriate Phase II WTL classes for their needs and a personalized schedule is created. Also addresses more complex nutrition topics such as choosing healthier fats for heart health, fitting in more fruits & vegetables, making an individual plan appropriate for your goals, and investigating different drinks. This class is a hands–on lab introducing portion sizes, reading nutrition facts labels, organizing a meal to meet nutrition needs, grocery shopping and cooking food in easily prepared meals. This class also includes a discussion about making healthier choices when eating out. Patients are scheduled for additional one on one follow–up appointments as needed to complete the Advanced WTL Nutritional Assessment.
  • Phase III – Follow–up Assessment: Patients are booked for a 60 minute EST appointment with Health Educator/Technician three months after completing Phase I and/or Phase II. The appointment consists of re–assessment screening for coronary artery disease (CAD) using ACSM Risk Stratification, blood pressure, body composition, and body circumferences. Sub maximal VO2 and Functional Movement Screens (FMS) are measured. Orders for fasting glucose and lipid panel including cholesterol are also conducted at this appointment. Patients can have labs drawn at Carl R Darnell Army Medical Center (CRDAMC) or any surrounding clinic. Patients are re–assessed every three months in follow–up appointments until personal goals are met
