As the premier naval power, the U.S. Navy protects America’s freedoms at home and abroad. While measures of support and protection are particularly taken with regard to the interests of Navy personnel and family members OCONUS, you are a critical partner to ensuring your safety. All members of the Navy community serving OCONUS are encouraged to be proactive in staying informed of potential hazards in the particular part of the world in which they are living or traveling.
To keep you informed, the U.S. State Department’s Bureau of Consular Affairs, in its mission to protect the lives and interests of American citizens abroad, administers the Consular Information Program. The program informs the public of conditions abroad that may affect their safety and security. Country Specific Information, Travel Alerts, and Travel Warnings are vital parts of this program.
Stay Informed with STEP
The Consular Information Program is more aptly able to benefit you if you sign up. As an American Citizen and member of the Navy family you are encouraged to Sign up for the free Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) (formerly known as “Travel Registration” or “Registration with Embassies”) to receive the latest travel updates and information in the interest of your safety! You only need to sign up once.
The benefits of STEP are:
- Automatic receipt of the most current information compiled about the country where you will be traveling or living
- Updates, including Travel Warnings and Travel Alerts (where appropriate).
- Reports on possible risks and security threats so that you can make informed decisions about your travel plans and activities
- Assistance, allowing consular officers in U.S. embassies and consulates around the world to more easily assist or contact you and your loved ones during an emergency (including assistance with lost or stolen passports)
- All the personal information you provide is protected under the Privacy Act of 1974.
