The NCIS mission is to investigate and defeat criminal, terrorist, and foreign intelligence threats to the United States Navy and Marine Corps-ashore, afloat, and in cyberspace.

1882: NCIS Origin In The Office Of Naval Intelligence
1916: Countering Espionage And Sabotage
1935-1945: Counterintelligence And Criminal Investigations
1966: Naval Investigative Service Established
1970s: Special Agent Afloat Program And Marine Special Agents
Early 1980s: FLETC And The ATAC

1985-1988: Evolution In Mission And Name
Early 1990s: Naval Criminal Investigative Service
1996: New NCIS Structure
Early 2000s: Expanded Authorities
