Eligibility & Course Registration

Eligibility Information

Thank you for your interest in the Defense Acquisition University (DAU). As long as you have a current affiliation with the United States government, you qualify to participate in training offered by DAU. The military Services and DoD non-MILDEP agencies, through their registration offices , have quotas in our classes. The DACMs establish priorities for their own military and civilian members, depending on several factors (e.g., if the student is in an acquisition-coded billet and their position requirements). The DACMs register their own members; the Federal Acquisition Institute (FAI) registers most non-DoD students.

Non-DoD federal agency and defense industry employees (contractors) may attend DAU courses at no cost on a space-available basis. There are some non-DoD and defense industry quotas in DAU courses; however, designated quotas are not in every class at every location. Non-DoD applicants should understand that DoD and MILDEP employees have precedence over all non-DoD federal agency and defense industry employees (the only exception is when there are specific quotas for these categories). This is particularly important in the case where a federal agency or defense industry employee is placed on a wait list , because all DoD and MILDEP employees are assigned a higher priority on the waitlist, even when they are added after the non-DoD and defense industry have been assigned a wait status.

Cost/Travel Fees

At this time, DAU does not charge tuition for its courses, except for certain foreign students. Foreign personnel, DOT-related agencies, industry, and non-DoD federal employees fund their own members' travel and per diem costs. For military and civilian employees, your Service's
Defense Acquisition Career Management (DACM) office will determine whether they or your command will fund your travel as part of the application process.

* * NEW Registration Login Process for Industry/Contractor Employees * *

Due to the restriction that requires individuals to use a DoD CAC to register for courses, DAU has partnered with ATRRS and implemented a solution. Beginning September 9th, 2016 Industry/Contractor users (with or without a CAC) will be able to login to the Industry Training Application System and register for courses by authenticating through DAU’s Identity Management System.

Click Here for step-by-step instructions that outline the new login process.

Application Status

Each DoD Service, e.g., Army, Navy, etc., has a specific training office that acts on your application. Your Service, including DoD non-military departments, funds your training, assists you with TDY orders, places you in a wait/reservation status or may disapprove your application.

Once your application has been approved, DAU will send you an automated Enrollment Notification or Welcome message to the email address provided on your training application. The Enrollment/Welcome message will contain instructions on accessing your Web-based course or the location of your class, if conducted in residence.

Web-based courses may take up to 48 hours to process/activate after being approved by your component’s
Defense Acquisition Career Management (DACM) office. DAU Continuous Learning Modules (CLMs) do not require any level of approval and should automatically process within the 48 hour time frame.

Waitlists

Resident/Classroom Courses:

The Services and DoD non-MILDEP agencies, through their
Defense Acquisition Career Management offices (DACMs), have quotas in our classes. The DACMs establish priorities for their own military and civilian members, depending on several factors (e.g., if the student is in an acquisition-coded billet and their position requirements). If you are placed on a waitlist, this means that all of the seats allotted to your organization have been occupied. If other organizations do not fill all of their allotted positions in the course, those seats will be opened to students on the waiting list.

If you do not receive an official reservation nearing the classroom start-date, you have two options available to you:

  • As there are often last minute vacancies, instructors will often allow "walk-ins" to fill any available seats in the classroom. Walk-in students are NOT guaranteed a seat, but they may be considered for admission once all registered students have been processed into the course. Walk-in students will then be seated based upon their position on the waitlist. This is determined by their priority and the date/time their application was processed via the registration system. It is also required for walk-in students to provide documented evidence, sufficient for the instructor, that all course prerequisite requirements have been met.

  • You may choose to submit an application for another offering of the course that occurs at a later date. Note: you may be on the waitlist for multiple offerings of the same course. Once a reservation occurs, your “wait” position for any additional offerings will be cancelled.

NOTE: As the DACMs register their own members, DAU has no control over training/waitlist priorities. Please feel free to consult your component’s registration help desk for further assistance in this regard.

Online Courses:

Distance Learning (DL) offerings that are part of the Defense Acquisition Workforce Improvement Act (DAWIA) curricula may endure waitlists periodically. These web-based courses are assigned instructors to support students with content-related inquiries. As a result, the number of enrolled students is restricted, per course, based upon the availability of certified instructors. Once you receive a virtual seat, you will receive an “Enrollment Notification” e-mail to inform you when you may begin the courseware in the DAU Virtual Campus. As most of these courses are “rolling admission”, there is no set time frame to determine when the enrollment will activate; it is only a matter of when currently enrolled students complete or expire from the course to allow waitlisted enrollments to activate.

NOTE: As applications for DAU Continuous Learning Modules (CLMs) do not go through an approval process, waitlists for these web-based offerings are seldom. If you receive a notice that you have been waitlisted for a CLM, it is possible that there is an error contained within the information provided on the student profile/course application. Please review your application, correct any errors identified, and try resubmitting your application. If you require assistance with your profile/application, please contact your component’s registration help desk.
