OB/GYN — Pelvic Pain

Pelvic pain can have many different causes. Pain can be caused by a gynecologic condition such as endometriosis, uterine fibroids, ovarian cysts and pelvic adhesions. It also can be the result of an intestinal, urinary or muscular problem. Pelvic pain can even be a manifestation of stress or depression.

Common reasons for pelvic pain include:

  • Pelvic Adhesions: Adhesions are bands of scar tissue that bind organs together
  • Uterine Fibroids: Fibroids are non-cancerous growths that develop in the uterus
  • Ovarian Cysts
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome: may be associated with diarrhea and/or constipation
  • Myofacial Trigger Points: created by spasm of the muscles that line the pelvis.
  • Endometriosis: a condition in which the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus.

Diagnosis:

Because pelvic pain has a number of causes, finding the source can be a long and complex process. To try to determine the cause of pelvic pain your provider will do a thorough history and most likely order tests.

Common Treatment Options:

Medications, physical therapy, surgery
