Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story participated in National Night Out on August 4th. The goal of National Night Out is to build community partnerships, enhancing relationships between citizens and law enforcement and promoting crime prevention. The Norfolk Tides hosted their annual Hurricane Preparedness Day on Tuesday, June 29 due to a rain out on June 2. This year, as in years past, Navy had a big presence, joining the Tides and community leaders in pushing hurricane and flood awareness. One of the big tips this year: Don’t wait to look into and invest in flood insurance! Flooding is the #1 natural disaster in the U.S., and it takes 30 days for a new flood insurance policy to take effect.
NAF Misawa Runs for Awareness on National Preparedness Day

On April 30, 2015, NAF Misawa sponsored its first annual 2.0 mile Emergency Management Awareness Run from the 35th CES/CEX parking lot to the Base Exchange. This was a joint event with participation from Navy, Air Force, and Red Cross personnel as well as Ombudsmen. The run was a culmination of month long preparedness and awareness efforts that included presentations and displays at Cummings and Sollars Elementary Schools, radio spots, and tabletop exercises focused on Typhoon readiness and TCOOR conditions.

NAF Misawa's Emergency Management Team Recognized for Disaster Preparedness Month Efforts
Naval Air Facility (NAF) Misawa's Emergency Management (EM) Team was recognized for their outstanding performance to increase disaster and emergency preparedness awareness during 2014's National Preparedness Month January 8, 2015. NAF's EM Team was one of twelve EM teams recognized Navy-wide in letters from Eric Rosenbach, the Assistant Secretary of Defense, for their creative and engaging initiatives.

In reply to acknowledgement of the team’s efforts during National Preparedness month, NAF EM Team member, Chief Damage Controlman Alberto Rodriguez said, "Historically, we've seen many disasters happen and most of the people affected don't have plans in place to take care of themselves and their loved ones resulting in unnecessary hardships. We will be able to effectively focus on handling the situation at hand knowing we've planned and have the means to survive on our own for an extended amount of time until outside disaster assistance is up and running."

Joint Base trains for winter weather

November 14, 2014 - The Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling (JBAB) Emergency Operations Center (EOC) was filled with leaders from throughout the installation on Nov. 6 as they prepared for a winter storm headed for the National Capital Region.
The mock storm was part of a tabletop exercise (TXX) coordinated by Emergency Manager Darryl Hart to ensure JBAB is ready for the coming winter season.
"Exercises like this prepare the base emergency support functions for severe weather threats," said Hart. "We activate the EOC when a big storm occurs to support the agencies that have work to do around the base in the event of a tornado, a hurricane, or in this case, a winter storm."

Since its inception, CNIC has been involved with innovative anti-terrorism and emergency preparedness training, an initiative driven in response to the lessons learned from previous natural and man-made disasters.
NAS Jacksonville hosted a mobile training team-delivered CNIC EOC-IMT Course from 9-11SEP14.
EOC-IMT course lessons cover EOC team member roles and responsibilities, information management, communications, and the use of C4I Suite, the Navy's current common operating picture online application. The course also consists of a number of practical application classroom exercises utilizing student working groups to apply the knowledge gained during lectures. For operations center exercises, students are broken into common EOC functional groupings (Operations, Logistics, and Plans) and given a practical scenario of an on-base emergency where they are forced to realistically lead, brief, coordinate, and plan. Each day, classroom instruction is followed by an EOC exercise that gets progressively complex as the course progresses.

September 24, 2014 - Aug. 29, President Obama proclaimed September 2014 to be National Preparedness Month. By this Proclamation, individuals are called upon to take action to prepare in advance for the likelihood of a variety of hazards our Nation faces in any given year.
At Naval Support Activity Bethesda (NSAB), that readiness has taken the form of a team effort between NSAB’s Emergency Management office, Fleet and Family Support Center and the American Red Cross.
Ready Navy Issues Kids Zombie Challenge
September 24, 2014 - For the third year, Ready Navy has issued a Zombie Challenge to the kids of Navy and Marine Corps families. This year’s challenge is to create a comic strip or, for those wanting a bigger challenge, to create a short YouTube-type video.
“Kids ask questions. They think about and often worry about what they should do in an emergency,” said Jeff Sanford, N37 Emergency Management. “The yearly challenges provide an opportunity for these kids to talk with their parents about hazards Navy families face and unleash their creative brains to prepare for a Zombie Apocalypse that will ultimately prepare them for any hazard.”

Rebranded in 2012, the public awareness program has created a robust website and various social media sites. Personnel and family members of all ages are able to link to a wide array of hazard information and resources to help guide family emergency plans that take into account individual needs. “We’d like to see everyone in the Navy Community become familiar with and take advantage of the number of resources that can be found on the Ready Navy Web site before the information is a critical necessity,” said Jeff Sanford, N37 Emergency Management.

September 09, 2014 - The month of September was proclaimed by President Barack Obama as the National Preparedness Month.
This culminates in a day of action Sept. 30, when we are all called to act. On this day of action we are challenged to prepare for six specific hazards: earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, wildfires, and winter storms.
In support of this initiative Commander, Navy Installations Command (CNIC) has launched an Emergency Preparedness campaign under the motto "Ready Navy."
"I want to see the National Day of Action, September 30th, become a Navy Day of Action where every member of the Navy is able to say 'YES' to the challenge, Are You Ready?" said Vice Adm. William French, commander, Navy Installations Command.

Extreme Weather Happens – Emergency Alerts Can Keep You Safe
July 2014 – Hurricane and Typhoon season is upon us. While many Navy Installations may not be affected by tropical cy-clones this season, they may be affected by other extreme weather. Ex-treme weather happens around the globe in the form of floods, severe thunderstorms, high winds, and storm surge, to name a few. Sorry, Zombies, We Are Ready

December 16, 2013 - I clicked through the Ready Navy Kids website with a sinking feeling. In one photo, a child in Navy camouflage held his "Bug Out" evacuation backpack. In another, Navy kids held maps of their homes identifying the location of fire extinguishers and exits. Family communication plans and contact cards were available to print and fill out for safekeeping. Sweet fancy Moses. I pictured my Marine kids trying to operate a hand-crank radio and cringed. I imagined having to knock on the door of a Ready Navy Family to borrow Band-Aids and toilet paper in the event of an emergency.

In the Northern Hemisphere they circulate counter-clockwise. Of the 10 tropical storms that occur each year, on the average 6 will become typhoons, developing in the Pacific Ocean. The typhoon threat has been low over the past 20-30 years but typhoons, like other, weather patterns come in cycles. Your best defense is to prepare yourself, your family, and your community.

Why did this happen, you might ask? Naval Hospital Yokosuka and its branch clinics, including very own Atsugi Branch Health Clinic, reported more than 95% of active duty service members received their flu vaccine.

April 1, 2013 - Hawaii Gov. Neil Abercrombie, alongside several other agencies, issued a proclamation naming April 2013 Tsunami Awareness Month at the State Capitol. The Hawaii State Civil Defense, the mayor of the city and county of Honolulu, Department of Emergency Management and National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Weather Service and representatives from the Department of Defense all took part in the proclamation, which emphasizes the importance of tsunami awareness and preparedness for residents and visitors of Hawaii.
