Welcome to the Basic Leader's Course (BLC)

The Basic Leader Course (BLC) is the first step in the Noncomissioned Officer
Education System. BLC trains newly appointed sergeants in basic leadership skills,
Noncommissioned Officer (NCO) duties, responsibilities and authority, and how to
conduct performance-oriented training. BLC focuses on leadership training. The
course produces battle-competent junior NCOs who are qualified team/section/squad
leaders, trainers of leader and war fighting skills, evaluators and counselors,
conductors/participants in individual and collective training, and performers/teachers
of leader skills, knowledge and attitudes.

BLC Prerequisites:

STUDENTS MUST

  • Meet height and weight standards IAW AR 600-9 IAW Army Directive 2012-20
  • Meet APFT requirements IAW FM 7-22 IAW Army Directive 2012-20
  • Not be flagged for failure to meet the standards of AR 600-9 or FM 7-22 IAW Army Directive 2012-20
  • have received a DA Form 1059 for "Failed to Achieve Course Standards" for BLC within six months of the day after the AER was signed IAW Army Directive 2012-20
  • Not have been released from BLC for failing to meet the height and weight standards or the APFT within one year IAW Army Directive 2012-20.
  • Possess eligibility for reenlistment and be recommended by their immediate commander
  • Have no convictions of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence(Lautenberg Amendment)
  • Arrive fully capable of performing supporting individual tasks and tasks required in the next lower level course, e.g., basic training, SMCT
  • Have a current Periodic Health Assessment (PHA) or medical examination within the past 12 months to attend BLC. (PEC states 5 years, which is an error IAW AR 40-501)
  • If age 40 or over, have completed a Cardiovascular screening as part of their PHA within the last five years.
  • Soldier's have 72 hours to provide all required missing documents. Solider who fail to provide required missing documents in the established time line will be dismissed and returned to unit.

BLC Inprocessing Requirements:

  • 8th Army Pre-Execution Checklist signed by the unit First Sergeant and Battalion CSM
  • TASS Checklist signed by unit Commanding Officer
  • DoD Cyber Awareness Challenge Training Certificate located at https://ia.signal.army.mil
  • Current MEDPROS printout - Individual Medical Readiness (IMR) Only
  • Medical Inprocessing Form
  • ERB (printed within 14 days of class start date)
  • I.D. Tags and I.D. Card
  • All clothing and equipment on the packing list. (Annex B)
  • DA Form 705 (it is the responsibility of the Commanders to ensure Soldiers meet the Army standards with-in 30 days before sending to any NCOES, per PEC, dated July 2009
  • DA Form 5500/5501 if applicable
  • Physical Profile if applicable
  • Flag removal DA Form 268 if applicable
  • Memorandum from commander if other than 10 ERUP code on ERB if Applicable

  • Army Physical Fitness Test (70%)
  • Conduct Squad Drill Performance Evaluation (70%)
  • Communication in Writing Performance Evaluation (70%)
  • Conduct Army Physical Readiness Training Performance Evaluation (70%)
  • Written Examination I, L234 Leadership module (70%)
  • Written Examination II, T227 Training module (70%)
  • Army Leadership Performance - Garrison (70%)
  • Land Navigation Evaluation (75%)
  • Conduct Individual Training Performance Evaluation (70%)
  • Oral History Brief Performance Evaluation (70%)
  • Written Examination III, W228 Warfighting module (70%)
  • Army Leadership Performance Evaluation - STX (70%)
