Advance Medical Directives

Texas law allows you to make an advance directive concerning your medical care. That is, you may make your wish concerning medical treatment known before you actually need such care. The Texas Natural Death Act authorizes you to create a Directive to Physicians.

Child Supervision

For the well-being of all of our patients, we encourage parents not to bring children to the hospital unless they have a scheduled appointment. Please check with the reception clerk to see if your physician allows children to accompany you in the exam room. Information on child care options, such as the number of free child care hours and which ranks can take advantage of them, is available through the Fort Hood Child Development Service.

Financial Obligations

Usually, beneficiaries do not have to pay for care at military hospitals. However, there are times when you must pay a reasonable portion of the cost of care. You can expect to pay some costs if you visit Darnall's Emergency Department and are admitted to the hospital.

Mental Health Confidentiality For Soldiers

Though most of what is discussed is confidential, there are some exceptions that are important for you to understand. Some common examples of those limitations can be found below. A full list of exceptions is included in the paperwork given to you on your first visit. If you have questions about what you read at any time, ask a staff member.

No-Shows and Late Appointments

Missed appointments compromise our ability to provide you quality care and hinder our ability to meet TRICARE access standards.

Notice of Privacy Practices

The Military Health System (MHS) Notice of Privacy Practices is provided as a requirement under the Privacy Rule of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) of 1996. Although the MHS has always had privacy and patient confidentiality standards in place to limit unauthorized access or disclosure of personal health information, the new privacy rule provides TRICARE beneficiaries with additional safeguards for ensuring their health information is adequately protected and is used by the MHS and TRICARE to provide quality patient care.

Patient Rights & Responsibilities

Effective health care requires a partnership between patients, physicians and other healthcare professionals. Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center strives to provide a foundation for understanding and respecting the rights and responsibilities of patients.

Tobacco / Smoke-Free Policy

Tobacco use is not permitted indoors. Use of tobacco products is only permitted in designated outdoor areas.

Visiting Hours and Wards

Darnall welcomes visitors. however, since too many visitors can tire patients, no more than two visitors are permitted to see a patient at any one time. To ensure the comfort of all patient, guests should talk quietly and leave promptly when visiting hours have ended. Visiting hours vary from ward to ward.
