SMA Chandler Asks Future Sergeants Major to Decide What the Army of 2025 Will Look Like

SMA Raymond Chandler spoke to Class 65 of the United States Army Sergeants Major Academy at Fort Bliss, Texas and challenged them to "look to the future and decide what kind of Army and NCO Corps they want to have".

"You will decide what the NCO corps will be," Chandler said. "If you look at the many challenges that we have today within our Army, or in the future, it will be an NCO at the end of the day who will get us that last 300 yards... Because the future of our Army is going to be in environments where non-commissioned officers using Mission Command will determine our success on the battlefield... It's a mark of your commitment to the Army Profession."

An Evolving Military Profession

The U.S. Naval War College hosted its first Ethics Symposium as part of the convocation events 18 Aug 2014. Rear Adm. Margaret Klein, senior advisor to the secretary of defense for military professionalism, was the keynote speaker during the event. She addressed ethical challenges the military is facing in today's constantly changing society. During her speech Read Adm. Klein talked about what it takes to be a great leader discussing concepts of trust, competence, character, and integrity.

"An evolving profession is one that survives and thrives, by seeing change as an opportunity to broaden your thinking and your experience," Klein said to the students.

Soldiers at the National Guard Readiness Center Learn More about the Army Profession

SMA Raymond Chandler recently visited with enlisted Soldiers assigned to the Army National Guard Readiness Center and surrounding installations in Arlington, VA. Addressing the noncommissioned officers, he spoke about the Army Profession touching on the Competence, Character, and Commitment of Army Professionals, and the essential Trust - the bedrock of the Army Profession - among Soldiers, Army Civilians, Army Families, and the American people.

"You and I have a shared set of values," SMA Raymond Chandler said. "The Army Values are what binds us together. A Warrior Ethos is what binds us together. It doesn't matter what component we're in. What matters is we all have a common sense of beliefs and values."

Cadets Learn about the Army Profession

MG David Puster discussed the Army Profession and the Army Ethic during an open forum with ROTC Cadets attending the Leader Development and Assessment Course (LDAC) at Fort Knox, KY. MG Puster discussed his history in the Army including all the lessons he has learned throughout his career.

"One of the things we are emphasizing in the Army right now is the three Cs: Character, Commitment, and Competency. Simply put, Character is the idea of doing the right thing, Commitment is doing your Duty, and Competency is being the best at all you do. This concept will help you develop yourself as a leader," MG Puster said.
