Is the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research or WRAIR (pronounced WRAIR) a medical treatment facility?

A: No. The WRAIR is dedicated to medical research for Soldier health that translates into knowledge and policy change, therapeutics and care for both the military and civilians around the world.

Has the WRAIR been affected by the recent Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) law?

A: Through the BRAC 2005, WRAIR has been focused into two Centers of Excellence named the Center for Infectious Disease Research and the Center for Military Psychiatry and Neuroscience.

Where is WRAIR in the structure of the Department of the Army and how is the Institute funded?

A: WRAIR is one of the research laboratories of the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command (USAMRMC) headquartered at Fort Detrick, MD. The USAMRMC is part of the U.S. Army Medical Department. Research at WRAIR is funded intramurally by the Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Army (Acquisition, Logistics and Technology) and the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense (Health Affairs). Through collaborative research and development agreements (CRADAs), partners may fund research that may best be carried out in WRAIR laboratories, whether in the U.S. or overseas (overseas laboratories link).

What types of research are conducted at WRAIR?

A: Research on malaria, leishmaniasis, HIV, dengue, enteric diseases, bacterial and viral diseases, wound infection and multidrug resistant organisms is accomplished in the Center for Infectious Disease Research. Post-traumatic stress, sleep management, brain injury and neuroprotection are actively investigated in the Center for Military Psychiatry and Neuroscience.

Does WRAIR manage the Forest Glen Annex?

A: No, the Forest Glen Annex is part of the U.S. Army Garrison Fort Detrick. Information is available at 301-319-9000 or you can also e-mail at usagpao@amedd.army.mil for more information.

Are there outreach activities at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research?

Is research conducted by the Institute available to the public?

A: All research of the WRAIR is published in the peer-reviewed scientific literature. See publication listings or use PubMed to search the medical literature at the National Library of Medicine at http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/.

Is all research by WRAIR carried out at Building 503 at Forest Glen?

A: Much of the research is conducted at the Forest Glen Annex but critical studies must be carried out in WRAIR’s overseas laboratories (link) in Germany for access to deploying Soldiers, and in sub-Saharan Africa and southeast Asia for endemic diseases.
