Defense Medical Readiness Training Institute

The Defense Medical Readiness Training Institute (DMRTI) is a tri-service organization staffed by professionals from the U.S. Army, Navy, and Air Force.  Our command is located at Fort Sam Houston, Texas and offers both resident and non-resident joint medical readiness training courses as well as professional medical programs for more than 4,000 students per year in Trauma Care, Burn Care, Disaster Preparedness, Humanitarian Assistance and CBRNE preparation/response.

  • Advanced Burn Life Support (Resident, Exportable)
    1-day course sponsored by the American Burn Association that focuses on the assessment and the management of burn patients during the first 24 hours post injury.
  • Advanced Trauma Life Support (Resident, Exportable)
    2½ day course sponsored by the American College of Surgeons© that prepares physicians to identify and respond to life-threatening traumatic injuries.
  • Combat Casualty Care Course (C4) (Resident)
    Basic 9-day continuing medical education program designed to enhance the operational medical readiness and pre-depoloyment trauma training skills of tri-service, medical officers.
  • Emergency War Surgery Course (Resident)

    2.5 day course sponsored by Emergency Nurses Association. The course enhances the nurse's ability to assess, rapidly and accurately, the patient’s responses to trauma.
  • Hospital Incident Command System Course (Resident, Exportable)
    An incident command system designed for hospitals and intended for use in both emergency and non-emergency situations. It provides hospitals of all sizes with tools needed to advance their emergency preparedness and response capability—both individually and as members of the broader response community.

  • Federal Coordinating Center & Primary Receiving Area Course (Resident)
    Provides an orientation to PRA/FCC program management and patient reception operations. This course is on patient reception operations conducted under the VA-DoD Contingency Plan and under the National Disaster Medical System (NDMS).
  • Joint Medical Operations Course (JMOC) (Resident, Exportable)
    JMOC is a five-day course that provides training in joint and combined operational and medical planning that will span the operational environment from point of injury/illness to the appropriate capability of care across the full spectrum of military operations.
  • Joint Medical Planning Tool Course (Resident, Exportable)
    5-day course that provides hands-on training on the JMPT as well as the Medical Planners’ Toolkit (MPTk). Through a series of exercises that utilizes the crawl, walk, run methodology; students will utilize the JMPT and MPTk to develop a model that demonstrates the flow of patients from the point of injury through definitive care implementing planning and logistics strategies for operational missions.
  • Public Health Emergency Management Course (Resident)
    Provides PHEOs and MEMs with the knowledge and skills they need to ensure that the DoD is ready to respond to public health emergencies and assist civilian and host nation authorities when called upon.
  • Emergency Preparedness Response Course/Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear & High-Yield Explosives Training (Online, Exportable)
    Meets the medical training requirements for Chemical/Biological (CB) and assesses the effectiveness of the training with rigorous proficiency metrics and standards.
