The Final Rule published in January 2009 mandated a conversion to International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10) coding from the current use of International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision (ICD-9). The Final Rule modifies the standard medical data code sets for coding diagnoses and inpatient hospital procedures by concurrently adopting the:
- International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM) for diagnosis coding, including the official ICD-10-CM guidelines for Coding and Reporting
- International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision, Procedure Coding System (ICD-10-PCS) for inpatient hospital procedure coding, including the Official ICD-10-PCS Guidelines for Coding and Reporting
In 2010, the HIPAA Transactions, Code Sets and Identifiers (TCS&I) Program began chairing an active ICD-10 Integrated Project Team (IPT) consisting of representatives with functional and technical perspectives from across the MHS. Under the IPT, sub-workgroups focus on Requirements and Testing, Training and Communication, Purchased CareThe TRICARE Health Program is often referred to as purchased care. It is the services we “purchase” through the managed care support contracts.Purchased Care, and Forms and Publications. At the IPT level, outcome goals are defined, and risks are reported and managed to increase communication, teamwork, and transparency for efficient and effective work toward the MHS transition to ICD-10.
