Mission

We improve the lives of patients and families impacted by TBI through excellence and innovation

Vision

To be a global leader in TBI care, research, and education

Guiding Principles

We are guided by the principles of excellence, innovation, compassion, honor, and collaboration

Message from the Director

As Director, I want to underscore the principles that guide the NICoE Directorate's mission of improving the lives of patients and families impacted by traumatic brain injury (TBI) through excellence and innovation. As part of the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC) and the U.S. Military Health System’s (MHS) TBI Pathway of Care, we play a key role in linking service members who are suffering from TBI and psychological health (PH) conditions and their families with appropriate inpatient and outpatient services. We also play a key role through our research program to advance TBI and PH diagnostics, care, and education.

In July 2015, the TBI services at WRNMMC and the NICoE were fully integrated as a new organization, the NICoE Directorate. This integration allows us to better serve the patients and families who come through our doors by offering expanded care options. It also increases opportunities to advance treatment delivery and research discoveries, not only for our patients but also for TBI and PH care and education across the MHS and around the world.

We recognize the value of providing compassionate care for our patients, and aim to provide treatment with a holistic, patient- and family-centered approach. This allows for extremely individualized care, and our approach has demonstrated effectiveness through high satisfaction scores and positive feedback from patients, families, and referring providers. Additionally, longitudinal assessment is showing the durability of our program long after completion.

Consistent, high-quality care is complemented by NICoE research, which leverages the combined strengths of federal, academic, and private organizations through research collaborations. Learning more about TBI and PH conditions benefits both those currently suffering, as well as future generations, and is critical to understanding our patients and their issues. Joining forces with organizations across the MHS, including the Defense Centers of Excellence for Psychological Health and Traumatic Brain Injury, the Defense and Veterans Brain Injury Center, and the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences, allows for collaboration and innovation to advance the science, share best practices, and ultimately provide better care for our patients.

Moving forward in the years to come, our goal is to continue to provide excellent care to the patients who come through our program, contribute to TBI and PH knowledge, and develop and share promising best practices for those who receive care in the MHS and beyond. This is the mission that drives our passionate, dedicated providers and staff every day, with every patient.

We are honored to care for our nation’s heroes and their families, and strive to be a global leader in TBI care, research, and education. With the dedication of our staff and advancing research collaborations, we continue to make measurable progress toward this vision.
