Cognitive

Cognitive conditions may include dyslexia, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Multiple Sclerosis, stroke, Alzheimer’s Disease, and traumatic brain injury (TBI).  Limitations could include memory loss, decreased organization, decreased concentration, word finding difficulty, or orientation difficulty.

The categories listed below include products that can assist individuals with any number of limitations resulting from cognitive conditions.  Because there are so many potential solutions for cognitive limitations, CAP cannot list all possible accommodations.  The products listed below present a variety of unique features to accommodate an array of limitations and are most often certified for use on federal agencies’ networks.

Accommodation Services (1)

If an individual does not know which solutions will meet their needs, a needs assessment may help determine what items will assist in performing the essential job functions.


Auditory Feedback Device (2)

Auditory Feedback Devices are used to assist individuals who have cognitive limitations that prevent them from accomplishing essential job tasks.  They accomplish this by allowing an individual to focus solely on sound being produced by a computer or other device and by limiting the amount of disruptive background noise in their work environment.  These devices can also limit distractions for other individuals in the office if a required function of the individual’s job is to obtain information through audio output.


Cueing/Memory Aids (1)

Cueing/Memory Aids are used to assist individuals who have cognitive limitations that prevent them from accomplishing essential job tasks.  They accomplish this by allowing an individual alternative ways to recall information, such as tasks, appointments or steps in how to accomplish activities.


Educational Software (5)

Educational Software is used to assist individuals who have cognitive limitations that prevent them from accomplishing essential job tasks.  They accomplish this by allowing an individual to receive digital information in various formats, including multisensory output, mind mapping, and built in dictionaries for definitions.


Voice Recorders (1)

Voice Recorders are devices that use a microphone to record audio information and save it in a digital format.  They can sort audio files into folders, play back information and download the information on a computer.


Word prediction software (2)

Word Prediction Software is used to assist individuals who have cognitive limitations that prevent them from accomplishing essential job tasks.  The software accomplishes this by allowing an individual to recall appropriate words.  The software predicts logical words, improves grammar, and sentence structure based on the contextual meaning of that sentence.
