Lake of the Ozarks Recreation Area

LORA is a great place to get away from all the worries of the everyday life. Enjoy camping, boating, swimming, water sking, fishing and other outdoor activities at Missouri's scenic playground, the Lake of the Ozarks. LORA is located 57 miles Northest of Fort Leonard Wood on the Grand Glaize arm of the Lake of the Ozarks. The lake is one of the nation's largest man-made lakes, giving you over 1300 miles of shoreline to enjoy.

When you're at LORA, you are only a short drive away from many of Missouri's best tourist attractions. There are caves waiting to be explored, amusement and water parks, golf courses, unique gift shops, as well as many fine restaurants and night clubs. It is easy to see why your stay at LORA will be fun and exciting for your entire family.

LORA welcomes Active Duty Military, Retired Military, Members of the National Guard and Reserves, DoD Employees with ID cards, Familiy Members and Fort Leonard Wood Contract Employees.

Helpful Hints for your Stay at Lora


ACCOMMODATIONS:

  • All units are air conditioned and winterized for your comfort

  • Linens, towels and washcloths are provided

  • Laundry, Open for public use 24 hours a day

  • Satellite T.V., VCR/DVD and Microwaves are provided in every unit

COUNTRY STORE:

  • The LORA Country Store is available to supply you with the basics for camping and fishing. The store carries ice, beer, firewood, and a selection of food including snacks as well as staples items like milk, eggs and bread.

  • April to Memorial Day Weekend: Friday through Sunday, 9am-4:30pm

  • Memorial Day Weekend through  Labor Day Weekend: 7 days a week, 8am-7pm
  • Labor Day Weekend through Columbus Day Weekend: Friday through Sunday, 9am-4:30pm

 

FISHING LICENSES:

  • Available at the Administrative Office (Bldg. 528)

  • Missouri residents $12.00/year

  • Non-residents $42.00/year

  • $7.00 daily

 

SWIMMING:

  • Swimming is authorized only in the designated beach area at times the beach is open

  • Beach hours vary pending weather and season

  • Swimming from docks or shores at LORA is prohibited

  • Artificial swimming aids, water wings, rafts, etc., are prohibited

BOAT & RV STORAGE:

  • Wet/dry storage available for rent - click for rates

  • Vehicles stored at LORA must be registered at our Administrative Office

Leave No Trace is a national and international program designed to assist outdoor enthusiasts with their decisions about how to reduce their impacts when they hike, camp, picnic, snowshoe, run, bike, hunt, paddle, ride horses, fish, ski or climb. The program strives to educate all those who enjoy the outdoors about the nature of their recreational impacts as well as techniques to prevent and minimize such impacts. About Lake of the Ozarks

The Lake of the Ozarks is Mid-America's premier vacation, golf and fishing destination. It is one of the largest lakes in Missouri, 55,000 miles of waterways. The Lake came into existence 75 years ago through an undertaking known as the Great Osage River Project. Union Electric, now Ameren UE, began construction on the Dam on August 6th, 1929. In the midst of the Great Depression, some 4,600 employees labored day and night to build Bagnell Dam and what was, at hte time, the largest man-made lake in the world. It was open to the public on May 30, 1931.

Surrounded by expansive forests and rolling hill, enhanced by dramatic bluffs, the lake boasts more than 1,115 miles of meandering shoreline. Fed by the Osage River, the Big and Little Nianguas and the Glaize River, it maintains a beautiful home for the great blue heron, many species of fish, waterfowl and animals from white tail to chipmunks.

Fun for family and friends includes indoor and outdoor water parks, amusement parks, miniature golf, go-carts, air excursions, excursion boat rides, boat races, horseback riding, bowling, toe-tappin' fun country music shows, festivals, fireworks, museums, and tours of local caves.

Although the lake offers some of Missouri's finest recreational and sight-seeing opportunities above the water, it's what's underneath that counts with anglers. And it counts with largemouth bass, crappie, white bass, stripers and catfish. When one species isn't cooperating, relax  - another will!

Covering 1,150 shore miles and 92 square miles of water, the lake offers one of the best scenic panoramas in the state and range of leisure and water activities that will excite and enchant any visitor.
