Col. William E. Duvall, IV is a Distinguished Military Graduate of The Citadel, where he was commissioned as an Armor officer in 1993. He currently serves as Chief of Staff, First Army Division West.

Col. Duvall’s first duty assignment was with 2nd Battalion, 12th Cavalry at Fort Hood, Texas, where he served as a Tank Platoon Leader, Company Executive Officer, and Assistant S3.

In 1997 Col. Duvall was assigned as a G1 Staff Officer at I Corps in Fort Lewis, Washington. In 1998 he assumed command of Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 32nd Armor Battalion, with a second command of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 32nd Armor Battalion in 1999. Duvall assisted in the transition of 1st Battalion, 32nd Armor Battalion into the Army’s first Reconnaissance, Surveillance and Target Acquisition Squadron (RSTA), 1st Squadron 14th Cavalry before relinquishing command.

From command, Col. Duvall served on the Grizzly Observer/Controller Team as a Scout Trainer, CO/TM Trainer, and as the assistant S3/BN Staff Trainer. In June of 2005, he was assigned to the 1st Brigade, 1st Armored Division (Ready First Combat Team) in Friedberg, Germany where he served as the BDE S4 and was responsible to deploy the Brigade to Iraq. Upon arrival into Iraq, Col. Duvall was assigned to 1st Battalion, 36th Infantry where he served as the Task Force XO for the deployment, redeployment and the closure of Ray Barracks, Friedberg, Germany. In the summer of 2007, Col. Duvall returned to Hohenfels, Germany where he served as the Deputy Senior Task Force Trainer for the Grizzly Observer/Controller Team.

In June of 2008, Col. Duvall was selected to be an Exchange Officer with the Australian Army and served as the Senior Tactics Instructor at the Australian School of Armor in Puckapunyal, Australia. In 2010, Col. Duvall was assigned to the 2nd Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kansas as a Stability Transition Team Chief in support of the 1st Battalion, 63rd Armor Regiment. Col. Duvall and his team advised the Commanding General, 6th Iraqi Army Division, until the US departure from Iraq in late 2011.

Col. Duvall was then assigned back to Fort Hood, Texas where he has been serving as the Training Division Chief, DPTMS, United States Army Garrison, Fort Hood. Col. Duvall than took command of 1-393 Infantry Regiment, 479 FA Brigade in December 2012 and relinquished command in December 2014. Following command Col. Duvall assumed the duties as the Command Inspector General for Division West. In June 2016, Col. Duvall assumed the duties of First Army West Chief of Staff.

Col. Duvall’s military education includes the Armor Officer Basic and Advance Courses and the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College.

His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Meritorious Service Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters, the Army Commendation Medal, Combat Action Badge, Parachutist Badge and Air Assault Badge.

Col. Duvall’s military education includes the Armor Officer Basic and Advance Courses and the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College.
