Adaptive and Inclusive Recreation Programs
Recreation maximizes the health and exercise benefits of physical activity. MWR offers a variety of recreation, sporting and quality of life programs for people with and without disabilities. Programs include structured classes, fitness rooms, full court gyms, libraries, hunting and fishing, arts and crafts, travel and organized sports.
Our Mission:
To provide Army Installations with the capabilities to support Soldiers and Families’ recreation opportunities; to fulfill their leisure wants and needs; to accommodate, modify, and adapt programs as requested or needed. To provide recreation and leisure activities without any physical or mental barriers. MWR Programs seek to meet the needs of all of our customers; Active Duty, Reserve, and National Guard Soldiers, Family Members, Retirees and Civilian employees.
Our Goal: is to ensure that MWR patrons have access to services they want and need by offering a broad spectrum of programs, including Outdoor Recreation, Sports, Fitness and Aquatics, Automotive Skills, Recreation Centers and Arts and Crafts.
All MWR Programs are inclusive: Inclusion is a philosophy that welcomes and embraces every member of the community regardless of a person’s disability. It enables an individual to be a part of the community by making choices; where basic values are important to each member and not just some; and where people have their needs met without restriction or limitations of any kind. It is everyone’s right to belong, to be valued and respected.
MWR staff will modify programs to be functional for all participants: Many existing activities require only small adjustments that enable a person with a disability to participate. Examples include swimming, riding, table tennis, bowling, martial arts, archery and arts and crafts. Often, a disabled person does not require special accommodations. Variations on how we offer services can be tailored to the individual.
New sports have been specifically developed for persons with disabilities, such as Goal Ball and Murder ball. Some existing sports are modified with adapted rules or equipment. Wheelchair basketball, track and field events, weight lifting and Sit Volleyball are just a few examples. Almost any activity can be modified or adjusted to enable everyone to take part.
