7 Tips for Finding a Job Overseas As a Military Spouse

You've just found out you're moving overseas, so it's time to start the job hunt again. Finding a job overseas as a military spouse presents a unique set of challenges. Here are some tips to help with your search:

1. Keep an open mind. You'll be in a new country. Be willing to think outside the box and outside of your current career. A volunteer position or a job that doesn't initially peak your interest can lead to a new career path with excellent promotion potential.

2. Have patience. Opportunities to work overseas can be more limited and may take longer to find than in the United States. Research your options ahead of time, so you can hit the ground running once you arrive at your new duty station.

3. Network. Take advantage of any connections you may have overseas, even before you move. You never know who could open career doors for you.

4. Be financially prepared. Prepare to live without a second income for an extended period of time. For many spouses, it takes up to six months to find a job overseas.

5. Research the job market. Gather as much information as you can before you move. Visit installation websites and consider all of your options — competitive civil service employment, Non-Appropriated Fund employment, defense contract work, and off-installation employment.

6. Branch out. If you're moving to a joint services area, make contact with the other service branches to learn about their opportunities. If your spouse is a Marine, for example, you may be able to take advantage of Air Force services-and job opportunities — on a nearby Air Force installation.

7. Be creative. Now is the time to be open to possibilities. You can create a job, start a business or go back to school. Let your new environment inspire you.

You're shaking up your world, and new possibilities and experiences await you. It will take some effort to find your new groove, but it will be worth it.
