Accession Screening and Immunization Program

The role of the Accession Screening and Immunization Program (ASIP) is to reduce unnecessary immunizations by screening military recruits for pre-existing immunity.

In the United States, the recommended childhood and adolescent immunization schedules provide protection against more than a dozen vaccine-preventable diseases. Increased compliance with those recommendations has led to higher rates of pre-existing immunity among the initial-entry military recruit population.

Therefore, nine initial-entry recruit sites now screen all new accessions for pre-existing immunity to hepatitis A, hepatitis B, measles, rubella and varicella (chickenpox).
