U.S. Navy Divers Use Advanced Equipment in Search for AirAsia Flight QZ8501 — An eight-member team from Mobile Diving and Salvage Unit (MDSU) 1 onboard USS Fort Worth (LCS 3) is supporting the ongoing Indonesian-led search effort for AirAsia flight QZ8501 with advanced Tow Fish side scan sonar systems capable of providing high-resolution images of the ocean floor.

Blue Angels Begin 2015 Winter Training — The U.S. Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron — aka the Blue Angels — have begun preparing for the 2015 air show season in El Centro, California.

Carrier Strike Group 4 Kicks Off COMPTUEX — Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 4 kicked off the Composite Training Unit Exercise (COMPTUEX) with the Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group (TRCSG). COMPTUEX, the cornerstone event for CSG-4, is an evaluation that tests the mission-readiness of deployable assets as it relates to their ability to react to training scenarios and perform as an integrated unit. Training scenarios include simulated surface, air, undersea, strike and electronic attacks.

Navy to Christen Fifth Joint High Speed Vessel — The Navy will christen the future USNS Trenton (JHSV 5) Jan. 10 during a 10 a.m. CDT ceremony in Mobile, Alabama. Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus will deliver the ceremony's principal address. Virginia Kamsky, chair and chief executive of Kamsky Associates, Inc., will serve as the ship's sponsor.

The Next Chapter of the Special Relationship in the Maritime Domain — RADM Kevin Donegan , deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Operations, Plans and Strategy (N3/N5) , discusses the significance of the cooperation between the U.S. Navy and the Royal Navy.

Navy Announces Installation Excellence Award Winners — Commander, Navy Installations Command (CNIC) has announced the Navy's 2015 Installation Excellence Award Winners. The annual installation excellence award recognizes the top three large and small installations world-wide and rewards installation performance consistent with Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD) strategic criteria for the DoD-wide Commander in Chief Installation Excellence Awards.

Full Steam Ahead for Navy Science: Winter Comes to ONR — The Office of Naval Research (ONR) has begun a new era, as Rear Adm. Mathias W. Winter — a decorated aviator with advanced degrees in both computer science and national resource strategy — was sworn in as the chief of naval research (CNR). Winter officially took the helm of ONR, the organization that leads Navy and Marine Corps research efforts, during a change-of-command held on Dec. 30. The ceremony was held at the Pentagon and officiated by the Honorable Sean Stackley, assistant secretary of the Navy (research, development and acquisition).

Fighting Forward: Last Oliver Perry Class Frigate Deployment — Dave Werner of the Naval History and Heritage Command writes about the “beginning of the end” for the Oliver Hazard Perry Class Frigate (FFG).

NSWC PCD, ONR and U of MT Conduct Heated Undergarment Technology Evaluation Program — The Office of Naval Research (ONR) funded research primarily conducted at NSWC PCD in Panama City, Florida this past year, identified the safe and highly-efficient, electrically-heated, diver thermal undergarments using Carbon Nano Core fibers, or CNC, are effective. The technology was developed through a collaborative ONR "Swampworks" research effort between NSWC PCD, the University of Montana's Center for Work Physiology and Exercise Metabolism (WPEM), and defense contractors SAIC and the Coliant Corporation.

ATLANTIC OCEAN (Sept. 23, 2014 ) The aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) leads a formation of ships from Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 12 during a maneuvering exercise. Theodore Roosevelt participated in the exercise with the Peruvian submarine BAP Islay (SS 35), the guided-missile destroyers USS Winston Churchill (DDG 81), USS Forrest Sherman (DDG 98), USS Farragut (DDG 99) and the guided-missile cruiser USS Normandy (CG 60). Fleet Week has been New York City's celebration of the sea services since 1984. It is an opportunity for citizens of New York and the surrounding tri-state area to meet Sailors, Marines, and Coast Guardsmen, as well as see first-hand, the latest capabilities of today's maritime services.
