Navy's First Hybrid Ship Celebrates Commissioning Anniversary — The amphibious assault ship USS Makin Island (LHD 8) celebrated her sixth commissioning anniversary, Oct. 24. The ship was formally commissioned in 2009 aboard Naval Air Station North Island. Although Makin Island is the eighth and last Wasp-class amphibious assault ship, she was the first built with gas turbines and an electric drive auxiliary propulsion system.
Register Now For DON IT Conference, West Coast 2016 — Registration is now open for the Department of the Navy Information Technology (DON IT) Conference, West Coast 2016 held Feb. 17-18, at the San Diego Convention Center in San Diego, California. No conference fee will be assessed, but registration is required. The DON IT Conference is typically held in fleet concentration areas on the West Coast and East Coast each year to minimize cross-country travel by participants. Additionally, conference sessions will be available via DCS.
Celebrating 30 years of AEGIS training — The Center for Surface Combat Systems (CSCS) and its learning site, AEGIS Training and Readiness Center (ATRC), celebrated 30 years of training, which included a Ribbon Cutting ceremony for their new wing, onboard Naval Support Facility Dahlgren, Va. Oct. 21.
Nominations for DON IM/IT Excellence Awards Due Jan. 7 — Nominations are now being accepted for the Department of the Navy Information Management/Information Technology (DON IM/IT) Excellence Awards. Submissions are due by Jan. 7. The awards recognize the superior efforts of IM/IT projects, teams and individuals in helping to transform the Navy and Marine Corps by applying innovative solutions to DON information technology.
Navy Divers Survey Historic WWII in Sunda Strait — U.S. Navy divers, assisted by personnel from the Indonesian Navy (TNI-AL), surveyed the World War II wreck of the cruiser USS Houston (CA 30), Oct 16-24. The nine-day operation was held aboard USNS Safeguard (T-ARS 50) with embarked divers from Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit 11, Mobile Diving and Salvage Team Seven (MDS 11-7). The purpose of the diving survey was to assess the current condition of the vessel and document any patterns of unauthorized disturbance of the grave site.
USS Albuquerque Arrives in Bremerton for Inactivation — The Los Angeles-class fast-attack submarine USS Albuquerque (SSN 706) arrived at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility to commence the inactivation and decommissioning process, Oct. 28. An inactivation ceremony was held in San Diego to honor the boat's 32 years of service, Oct. 16. During the ship's life, Albuquerque deployed 19 times, visited more than 20 countries, and steamed more than 500,000 miles.
Maritime Theater Missile Defense Forum Completes At Sea Demonstration — The Maritime Theater Missile Defense (MTMD) Forum wrapped up its At Sea Demonstration (ASD) 2015 event, Oct. 27, culminating nearly four years of planning and three weeks of at sea operations in the North Atlantic.
