PROJECT LOCATION AND DESCRIPTION

The Sacramento River Deep Water Ship Channel (SRDWSC) is a 43.4 mile long channel that lies within Contra Costa, Solano, Sacramento, and Yolo Counties and serves the marine terminal facilities at the Port of West Sacramento.  The 30’ deep SRDWSC joins the 35’ deep John F. Baldwin Ship Channel at New York Slough, thereby affording access to the Bay area harbors and the Pacific Ocean. The project involves resuming construction of the 35’ deep channel as authorized in 1986, to realize transportation cost savings. A Limited Reevaluation Report (LRR) and Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement/Report (SEIS/R) are required.

FY 15 ACCOMPLISHMENTS

• Published in Federal Register that the EIS/R process has been terminated, pending increased economic demand for the project.

FY 16 ACCOMPLISHMENTS (based on availability of funds)

• Further study work is on hold, pending resumption/start of adequate forecasted commodities. 

ISSUES AND OTHER INFORMATION

• The Port of West Sacramento is the non-Federal Sponsor (NFS).
• Construction of the project was initiated in 1989, but work was suspended in 1990 at the request of the NFS.
• Approximately 50% of the ~10M cy of dredged material from deepening is targeted for beneficial reuse, providing a significant benefit to the CA Delta.
• This is one of the largest projects to be constructed in the environmentally-sensitive CA Delta in several decades.
• Estimated total project cost of $220,201K does not include cost of mitigating salinity impacts, which still needs to be determined.
