Building Strong® at Green Peter Dam and Reservoir

Green Peter Dam is located at river mile 5.5 on the Middle Santiam River, 11 miles northeast of Sweet Home, Ore.

Green Peter Dam is a concrete structure with a gated spillway that was completed with Foster Dam in 1968 at a cost of $82.3 million. Green Peter Dam has two hydropower generating units capable of producing a total of 80 megawatts.

Green Peter Dam works in coordination with Foster Dam for the purposes of flood risk management, hydropower, water quality improvement, irrigation, fish and wildlife habitat and recreation.

Linn County Parks at Green Peter

Thistle Creek Boat Ramp - year-round, low-water boat ramp
Whitcomb Creek Park - seasonal campground and boat ramp
Group Camping Area - Mile Post 16, Quartzville Road, near Trout Creek. $150 per night; call 541-967-3917 to reserve.
Boat-in Camping - Boaters may park overnight in the Whitcomb Creek County Park boat ramp parking lot; purchase a $7 permit.

Changes to Quartzville Corridor Recreation

The Corps and Linn County Parks completed a plan in 2011 to improve the quality and safety of recreation at Green Peter Reservoir. The entire Green Peter Reservoir Recreation Plan is available here.

Phase I of the plan includes expanding and improving Whitcomb Creek Campground, developing reserveable campsites at Trout Creek, and eliminating roadside camping on Corps land along Quartzville Road to Mile Post 17.2 just past Trout Creek.

Roadside camping has been permanently closed, effective April 1, 2014. Other improvements will be implemented as funding becomes available.

Environmental stewardship

Restoring degraded uplands, wetlands and streams on Corps lands is a main focus of the Willamette Valley Environmental Stewardship program. Recent efforts to improve wildlife habitat on Corps’ lands here centered on replacing invasive plants with native trees and shrubs, and restoration of hydrology and topography to support native plant communities and wildlife habitat.

Osprey nest along the shorelines of the lake and are annually monitored. The Corps works with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife to support resident game and nongame fisheries within the waters of the Middle Santiam River basin.

Flood risk reduction

Conservation season: April to November: None.
Flood season: November to March: Restrict pool elevation to 1002 feet.
