28th BEYA STEM Science Spectrum Trailblazer Award: District Civil Engineer Franchelle Craft was selected as a Science Spectrum Trailblazer Award recipient by the 28th Black Engineer of the Year Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Global Competitiveness Conference, an honor bestowed upon minority men and women who actively create new paths for others in science, research, technology and development.
USACE 2013 Outstanding Safety Contribution: Safety Officer Patrick Spoor received the 2013 Outstanding Safety Contribution award for exceptional technical support during the revision of E-M 385-1-1 [Safety and Health Requirements Manual (2013 Edition), Section 19, Floating Plants and Marine Activities. In addition, personnel assisted in the rewrite of Section 1, Program Management and Section 5, Personal Protective Equipment.]
Texas Association of Environmental Professionals: Casey Cutler, Regulatory Branch, was selected as the 2013 Regulatory Professional of the Year by the Texas Association of Environmental Professionals. One of the primary aims of TAEP is the advancement of the environmental profession and the establishment of a forum to discuss important environmental issues.
Houston-Galveston Area Council: The USACE Galveston District was recognized as a 2013 Clean Air Champion by the Houston-Galveston Area Council for its Vanpool Program, which offers commuting alternatives to employees.
Ragan's 2013 PR Daily Awards: The USACE Galveston District Public Affairs Office received an honorable mention for the Best PR Team of the Year.
Public Relations Society of America's Houston Chapter: Silver Excalibur Award: News Conference/Publicity Stunt, April Pools Day: A one-day media event to educate the public about water safety and partner with community leaders, volunteers and citizens to help reduce public fatalities and improve public safety.
PRSA's Houston Chapter: Silver Excalibur Award: Internal Communications Campaign, Corps Cares: Communicating Cutbacks: An aggressive command information campaign to educate district employees about the organization’s current fiscal climate and inform staff of necessary agency-wide budget cutbacks to avoid district-wide layoffs.
PRSA's Houston Chapter: Silver Excalibur Award: Public Service Program, Communicating Reductions of Levels of Service: A community relations campaign to educate recreational boaters who frequent the Colorado River Locks and/or the Brazos River Floodgates about the organization’s agency-wide initiative to reduce the wear and tear on navigation lock equipment and gates to prolong the life of the systems and make available more operating dollars to address ongoing maintenance needs, following the reduction in the USACE fiscal year 2013 nationwide inland navigation budget.

PRSA's Houston Chapter: Silver Excalibur Award: Social Media, Storytelling through Social Media: A part of a larger community relations campaign to maximize outreach efforts, engage the public and tell the Corps’ story; the Public Affairs Office began posting monthly Employee Spotlight stories online to not only highlight staffs’ achievements, but to enlighten the public about our role in the communities in which we live, work and play. The campaign allowed staff to put a face to the organization, as USACE Galveston District employees are often the organization’s best advocates, commonly on the front lines telling our story.
PRSA's Houston Chapter: Silver Excalibur Award: Special Event, Communicating a Campaign to Save Shorelines: A campaign to increase Texas coastal residents’ awareness and understanding of the district’s ecosystem restoration mission, economic contributions to the nation and efforts to employ environmentally and economically responsible ways to use dredged materials to benefit local communities and improve eroded coastlines through beach nourishment and beneficial use programs.
Houston Project Office: The National Water Safety Congress recognized Kristine N. Brown, natural resources specialist/park ranger, with the 2013 Award of Merit for her outstanding contributions to water safety during 2012. Nationwide Competition

Herbert A. Kassner Public Affairs Competition: Category A: Community Relations Individual Achievement - First Place -- Isidro Reyna, APR: Reyna joined the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Galveston District as a civilian public affairs officer in 2009. As the deputy public affairs officer, he maintains internal and external communications and effectively conveys the district’s engineering mission to a complex military, civil service and contract workforce as well as key audiences ranging from congressional representatives to the public. During his tenure, Reyna has been instrumental in increasing awareness of the value the Corps brings to the local community, state and nation.

Kassner Public Affairs Competition: Category K: Human Interest Features - First Place -- Stephen Sheedy: A feature story on Rashid Sheikh-ali, who set out on a life-changing journey in 1980 that would take him from Africa to America –where he would become a structural engineer for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Galveston District.

Kassner Public Affairs Competition: Category H: Television Information Program - Second Place -- Dig This: Dredging Along the Texas Coast: In an effort to educate the public about the importance of keeping waterways open for navigation, staff created a four-minute video infographic about dredging along the Texas coast, the economic impact shipping has on the nation and the potential consequences of failing to conduct advanced waterway maintenance.

Prairie View A&M University 2013 Corporate Partner Excellence Award: The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Galveston District was selected as the 2013 award recipient. The award recognizes, honors and celebrates organizations whose contributions, dedication and commitment contribute to the overall success of students in the Roy G. Perry College of Engineering programs.

International Boating & Water Safety Summit Media Awards: USACE Galveston District’s Simon DeSoto, Colorado River lockmaster, earned second and third place awards for his radio water safety public service announcements during the 17th International Boating & Water Safety Summit in San Antonio, Texas. DeSoto partnered with Happy Radio 92.5 to produce and broadcast the PSAs to a potential audience of 36,000 listeners along the Texas coast.
USACE Galveston District: The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Galveston District named Administrative Support Assistant Mary Baugh of the Planning, Environmental and Regulatory Division the 2013 Administrative Professional of the Year.
USACE: USACE Locke L. Mouton Public Affairs Award of Excellence, First Place, Sandra Arnold, APR+M, with assistance from Isidro Reyna, APR. The annual Mouton Awards honor individual public affairs practitioners for superior achievement in media relations and public information, community relations, command information and emergency/disaster response. Arnold was recognized in the command information category for the district's Corps Cares: Communicating Cutbacks campaign.
Construction Branch: USACE Ronald J. Ruffennach Communicator of the Year Award, Eduardo "Eddie" Irigoyen, civil engineer/construction manager, nationwide competition. Awarded to a key communicator outside of the public affairs career field, Irigoyen received the honor for his continuous support of the USACE Galveston District’s Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Awareness Program.
Hermes Awards: The USACE Galveston District was recognized with a Gold Award from the 2013 Hermes Creative Awards competition for its Corps Cares: Congressional Report. The annual reports are distributed electronically to community leaders and congressional representatives, including both Texas and Louisiana senators and are posted on the district's website.
