Directions

Bolivar Dam is approximately 1 mile east of I-77. At I-77, take Exit 93 which is the Bolivar/Zoar – State Route 212 Exit. Take State Route 212 east roughly ½ mile and make a left on Tuscarawas County Road 103. Go approximately 100 yards, take a left onto Glenpark Road, approximately a mile down the road is Bolivar Dam and Facilities. See Map

General Information

Bolivar Dam is on Sandy Creek of the Tuscarawas River, 183.4 miles above the mouth of the Muskingum River, located in Stark and Tuscarawas Counties of Ohio. The Dam has an impervious core with a cut-off trench and is flanked by pervious zones. The embankment has a maximum height of 87 feet, a crest length of 6300 feet, and a crest width of 25 feet. Constructed primarily for flood control, the maximum flood control pool level of elevation 962.00 feet would encompass 6500 surface acres. There are two levees, Magnolia Levee and East Sparta Levee, within the Bolivar Dam reservoir. Bolivar Dam is a Dry Dam which by definition does not have a permanent pool or lake behind the dam. Only during times of excessive rain and prevention of downstream flooding does the dam retain water creating a temporary pool. For tours of the Dam and Facilities call the Project Office @ (330) 874-2121. Restroom facilities are provided at the Bolivar Dam Day Use Area on a seasonal basis (April - October).

 

Historical Info

There are no significant historical / cultural areas at the project, but within a 10 mile radius there is the Historic Village of Zoar and , Fort Laurens.

Bicycling

Bicycles are permitted on main roads in the Park Area.

 

Boating

There are no boat launch ramps at Bolivar Dam, there is a canoe livery downstream. For information call NTR Canoe Livery @ (330) 874-2002.

 

Camping

There is no camping at Bolivar Dam.

 

Fishing

Fishing is permitted at Bolivar Dam, with the best fishing done in the spillway area. There is a fishermen's parking lot at the downstream area.

 

Handicapped Access

Universally Accessible Facilities are provided at the Bolivar Dam Day Use Area on a seasonal basis (April - October).

 

Hiking

There are no marked hiking trails at Bolivar Dam, but hiking is permitted on the horse trail and surrounding woods.

 

Horseback Riding

Horseback riding is restricted to a specified trail. For more information contact the Project Office @ (330) 874-2121.

 

Hunting

Public hunting and trapping is NOT allowed until construction is complete. The construction is scheduled to be completed in July 2018. If dates change updates will be posted here. For more information call the Project Office @ (330) 874-2121.

 

Marina

There is no marina at Bolivar Dam.

 

Picnicking

Picnic sites are located in the Day Use Recreation Area at Bolivar Dam.

 

Swimming

There is no designated swimming area at Bolivar Dam. Bolivar Dam is a dry dam.

 

Visitor Center

There is no Visitor Center at Bolivar Dam.

Due to the work progressing on the BOS Seepage Barrier Contract, the Bolivar Dam Project will be closed to visitors except for the lower fishing area until further notice. That area has fishing available with one picnic table, a charcoal grill and two trash cans. We also plan to supply a port-a-jon to that area during the summer months and to place an informational kiosk there.   This also will include 'No Hunting' on the entire project due to the extent of the work for the next few years projected to be completed in 2018. Our plans are to leave the 'horse trail' open since it is outside of the contractor's work limits.
