#OTD: In 1983, exceptional Native American athlete Jim Thorpe had his Olympic medals restored by the International Olympic Committee, nearly 30 years after his death. Born in a one-room log cabin on the North Canadian River near Belmont in Oklahoma territory, Thorpe was an All-American football player for the Carlisle Indian School located at Carlisle Barracks, #Pennsylvania.

During the four years he played for the Carlisle Indians, this small school won 43 games, lost 5 and... tied 2. Included in the list of defeated powerhouses were Penn State, Syracuse University, West Point - The U.S. Military Academy, United States Naval Academy, University of Minnesota, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Chicago (under Amos Alonzo Stagg), Princeton University, Harvard University, and Villanova University.

In the 1912 summer Olympic Games in Stockholm, Sweden, Thorpe won both the pentathlon and decathlon and finished 4th in the broad jump. Following college, he played six seasons of professional baseball (1913-1919) and 15 seasons of professional football (1915-1929).

In 1950, Thorpe was voted the "Greatest Male Athlete of the Half Century" by the Associated Press. In 1977, he was selected as the "Greatest Football Player in History" in a poll conducted by Sport Magazine.

#OTD: In 1781, Continental Army and militia units commanded by New Jersey native Daniel Morgan defeat Banastre Tarleton's British Legion at Cowpens in South Carolina. Morgan and General Nathanael Greene had been retreating from (and leading) Lord Cornwallis' army northward after the latter's battlefield victories at Charleston and Camden in South Carolina.

At Cowpens, Morgan stopped his retreat and turned to meet Tarleton's command with his back to the Broad River. Morgan put... his militia in front of the regulars and asked only that they fire twice, then withdraw to the left and reorganize behind the Continental Army regulars.

The British, seeing their movement and thinking that they had won, pressed forward and found the regulars ready and waiting for them. Morgan's cavalry, which had been hidden behind a hill to the rear, swept around to the British flanks and hastened the American victory. After one hour, it was over.

With colder weather expected to return to the northeast for the next few days, this thought from our National Park Service friends at Morristown National Historical Park helps keep things in perspective.

You may be cool but you'll never be "Continental Soldiers surviving a winter at Morristown" cool...

The winter of 1779-1780 is still the worst recorded in U.S. ...history for the northeast. Washington wrote on January 6, 1780, "The snow which in general is 18 inches deep is much drifted — roads impassable." This accumulation of 18 inches fell on top of nearly four feet of snow already on the ground from previous snowstorms.

The temperatures were so cold for such an extended period of time that all rivers, creeks, and streams in the northeast froze solid. There are even reports of British troops hauling cannon across the frozen Hudson from Manhattan to Staten Island.
