Following Hurricane Sandy, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Philadelphia District worked to restore its previously constructed Coastal Storm Damage Reduction projects in New Jersey and Delaware. These areas already had an engineered beach system in place before the storm hit. In New Jersey, these projects included part of Long Beach Island; Atlantic City and Ventnor on Absecon Island; Brigantine; North Ocean City; Avalon and Stone Harbor; and Cape May City. In Delaware, these projects include Rehoboth & Dewey; Bethany & South Bethany; Fenwick Island and Lewes Beach. 

USACE has been working to construct projects that were not yet built when Hurricane Sandy hit. These projects and statuses are: 

• Manasquan Inlet to Barnegat Inlet: contract not yet awarded
• Barnegat Inlet to Little Egg Harbor Inlet: construction began in late April of 2015
• Absecon Island (Absecon Island beachfill): contract not yet awarded
• Absecon Island (Atlantic City bulkhead, revetment): contract awarded; construction ongoing
• Great Egg Harbor Inlet to Townsends Inlet: construction ongoing 
• Oakwood Beach (Elsinboro Township): work completed

The New Jersey Atlantic Ocean coastline extends from Sandy Hook to Cape May, New Jersey, covering a range of approximately 130 miles.  The New Jersey coastline from Manasquan Inlet south to Cape May Point lies within the boundaries of the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Philadelphia District while from Manasquan Inlet north is under the jurisdiction of the USACE, New York District. Seven federally authorized beachfill projects have been constructed along the Philadelphia District’s New Jersey coastline. The Philadelphia District oversees the entire Delaware coast as well as the Delaware Bay. The District has constructed five coastal storm damage reduction projects in Delaware. These projects are designed and built to reduce storm damages to infrastructure from hurricanes and northeasters.
