Velazquez, a research civil engineer in the Geotechnical and Structures Laboratory of the U.S. Engineer Research and Development Center, was named the 2016 Civil Engineering Distinction Award winner. Velazquez was recognized Oct. 7, by the Hispanic Engineer National Achievement Awards Corporation during their 28th annual conference in Anaheim, Calif.

Federal, state and local officials celebrated the grand opening Oct. 7 of the Petersen Ranch Mitigation Bank, an effort that will eventually restore about 4000 acres of native wetland habitat along the San Andreas Fault rift zone in the Leona Valley north of Los Angeles.
