FARGO, N.D. -- Darrell Vanyo, Diversion Authority chairman, from left; Del Rae Williams, Moorhead, Minnesota, mayor; Tim Mahoney, Fargo, North Dakota, mayor; and Lowry Crook, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Army (Civil Works), sign a project partnership agreement in Fargo, July 11.

The project partnership agreement signing initiates the construction phase of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Fargo-Moorhead Metropolitan Area Flood Risk Management Project. This project includes building a 30-mile diversion channel that will direct floodwater around the Fargo-Moorhead metropolitan area. The project will reduce flood risk for more than 225,000 people and 70 square miles of infrastructure.

LAKE ITASCA, Minn. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, is celebrating its 150th anniversary by canoeing the Upper Mississippi River from its headwaters at Lake Itasca to Lock and Dam 10, in Guttenberg, Iowa. Corps staff are volunteering to canoe the river and plan to reach Lock and Dam 10 on Aug. 17, the day Maj. Gouverneur K. Warren, the district’s first commander, established the St. Paul District.
