Maintenance of Infrastructure and Stewardship
AUTHORIZATION: The Federal Navigation Maintenance Project of Jamaica Bay was authorized by the Rivers and Harbors Acts of 1910 and subsequently modified by the Rivers and Harbors Acts of 1945 and 1950.
DESCRIPTION: The existing project provides for an entrance channel 20 feet deep at mean low water, 1,000 feet wide, about 1.7 miles long and connecting two interior channels with deep water in the Atlantic Ocean, of suitable hydraulic dimensions to maintain the present tidal prism in the bay.
COMMERCE: The five-year average annual commercial tonnage at Jamaica Bay Federal Navigation Channel is 560,683 tons of petroleum products and construction materials.
STATUS: In FY2016, funding of $251,000 was provided for engineering and design for the next maintenance dredging cycle.
