The South Atlantic Division operates and maintains 25 major harbors in the Southeast, from Morehead City, N.C. on the Atlantic Coast of North Carolina to Pascagoula Harbor in Mississippi on the Gulf of Mexico. These include some of the busiest harbors in the nation, including Wilmington, NC, Charleston, SC, Savannah, GA, Jacksonville, FL, Miami, FL, Tampa, FL and Mobile, AL. Currently several of these harbors are under study for deepening in anticipation of the opening of the enlarged Panama Canal in 2014.
In addition to deep-draft coastal navigation, the division also maintains 6300 miles of inland waterway on rivers throughout the region. These include the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway, the Black Warrior-Tombigbee Waterway, the Okeechobee Waterway, and intracoastal canals along both the Gulf and Atlantic Coasts.
