Weapon systems may affect the environment as a result of materials, processes and uses. Environmental constraints and requirements may influence system design, modification, testing, production, operation, maintenance, repair, demilitarization and disposal. Incorporating environmental considerations into the process early is important because it: prevents schedule delays; minimizes costs that the Army will incur in order to modify and support weapon systems; satisfies military readiness while protecting the environment; ensures compliance with applicable environmental laws and regulations, and DoD/Army policy. All weapon system programs, regardless of acquisition category and throughout their life cycle, must comply with Environment, Safety and Occupational Health (ESOH) requirements. The USAEC provides environmental expertise to help ensure acquisition compliance with ESOH requirements.
