What is it?

Natural resources are derived from the environment.  Some of them are essential for our survival while most are used for satisfying our wants.  A natural resource is often characterized by amounts of biodiversity and geodiversity existent in various ecosystems.  An ecosystem is a community of living organisms (plants, animals and microbes) in conjunction with the nonliving components of their environment (things like air, water, and mineral soil), interacting as a system.

At its fundamental level, every man-made product is composed of natural resources.  A natural resource may exist as a separate entity such as fresh water and air, as well as a living organism such as a fish, or it may exist in an alternate form which must be processed to obtain the resource such as metal ores, oil, and most forms of energy.

What has the Army done?

The Army’s primary mission is to provide national defense.  As a federal agency, the Army is required to comply with a variety of natural resources laws, such as the Endangered Species Act (ESA); the Migratory Bird Treaty Act (MBTA); the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act (BGEPA); the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA); and the Sikes Act.

Why is this important?

Military lands are comprised of over 30 million acres of land across the U.S.  These lands are rich in natural resources and encompass a wide variety of habitat types (e.g., wetland, grasslands, semi-arid scrublands, and forests).  These and other high quality habitats host a wide array of threatened, endangered, and at-risk species. They also provide valuable ecosystem services and ensure a strong foundation for realistic and sustainable military training and testing.
