Janet Kim currently serves as the Deputy to the Commander at the U.S. Army Environmental Command (USAEC). In this role, Ms. Kim provides leadership and oversight to a staff of more than 100 environmental, financial and human resources, and public affairs professionals.
Prior to assuming the duties of the Deputy, Ms. Kim served as the USAEC Chief of the Environmental Service and Support Division - West Region, overseeing personnel responsible for executing environmental cleanup and environmental quality projects in support of the Army’s Environmental Program.
Ms. Kim, who joined the command in 1992, held various leadership positions including Chief, Environmental Quality Programs Division and Chief, Strategic Planning and Program Initiatives Office. Ms. Kim began her Army career as a Department of the Army Civilian as a charter participant in the Federal Junior Fellowship Program. While interning with the Army, Ms. Kim earned her B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Washington University in St. Louis. Upon graduation, Ms. Kim worked in the test and evaluation arena, with assignments in the Army Materiel Systems Analysis Activity, HQ Test and Evaluation Command, and the Office of the Program Manager for Instrumentation, Targets, and Threat Simulators (now part of PEO for Simulation, Training and Instrumentation). During her tenure in the acquisition community, Ms. Kim conducted mobility and transportability analyses of major Army systems, such as the Bradley Fighting Vehicle and the Abrams Main Battle Tank.
Since switching career fields to environmental support, Ms. Kim’s numerous challenging assignments include the standup of the Joint Program Office at the Massachusetts Military Reservation, representing the USAEC on the Army Installation Management Transformation Task Force, and serving several details to the Pentagon with the Army’s Base Realignment and Closure Office and the Office of the Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Army (Environment, Safety, and Occupational Health).
Ms. Kim, a Department of the Army certified Lean Six Sigma Black Belt, also has significant expertise and experience in contract acquisition and management.
