Colonel Michael T. Cuccio

Colonel Cuccio, a Mahopac, New York native, was commissioned on May 31, 1989 upon graduation from the United States Naval Academy. Following completion of The Basic School and Infantry Officer Course, he reported to the 1st Marine Division in Camp Pendleton, California, where he served as a Rifle Platoon Commander, Company Executive Officer, and Combined Anti-Armor Platoon Commander with 3d Battalion, 1st Marines. While with 3/1, he deployed to the Persian Gulf with 5th Marine Expeditionary Brigade for Operations DESERT SHIELD and DESERT STORM, participated in riot control during the 1992 Los Angeles riots, and completed a deployment with 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit.

Following a tour at Marine Barracks, Washington DC, Colonel Cuccio attended Amphibious Warfare School and reported to 2d Marine Division in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, serving as Commanding Officer of Headquarters Company, 2d Marine Regiment; Commanding Officer of Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 2d Marines; Commanding Officer of II MEF Marine Forces Unitas; and as Assistant G-3 Operations Officer, 2d Marine Division. In 1999, he served as an individual augment at Headquarters, United States European Command in Stuttgart, Germany, as a Contingency Operations Planner in support of Operations ALLIED FORCE and JOINT GUARDIAN. During this period, he was forward deployed to Pristina, Kosovo, to serve as a Liaison Officer to Headquarters, Kosovo Force. In 2000, he completed a deployment to South America with Unitas.

From 2001 to 2004, Colonel Cuccio served as Assistant Head, Enlisted Retention and Counseling Section (MMEA-6), M&RA, Headquarters, U.S. Marine Corps. In 2004, he was reassigned to the Joint Staff, where he served as Assistant Chief, Multinational Operations Division, Operations Directorate (J-3).

In 2007, Colonel Cuccio reported to 3d Marine Division in Okinawa, Japan, and served as the G-3 Future Operations/Plans Officer. In 2008, he was deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM as an Embedded Training Team Officer-in-Charge with the 201st Corps of the Afghan National Army.

From 2010 to 2013, Colonel Cuccio served as Head, Expeditionary Policies Branch (POE), PP&O, Headquarters, U.S. Marine Corps. In 2013 he was reassigned to U.S. Marine Corps Forces South, where he served as Chief of Staff. Colonel Cuccio commenced service as Deputy Commander, Expeditionary Strike Group Two in July 2016.

Colonel Cuccio has a Bachelor of Science degree in Ocean Engineering from the United States Naval Academy and a Master of Arts degree in International Affairs from the Catholic University of America. He is a graduate of the Air War College nonresident program, USMC Senior Planner Course, Joint and Combined Warfighting School, Marine Corps Command and Staff College nonresident program, and Amphibious Warfare School. He holds the designations of Joint Qualified Officer, Latin America Regional Affairs Officer, and Foreign Security Force Advisor.

His personal decorations include the Legion of Merit with one Gold Star, Bronze Star with Combat Distinguishing Device, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with two Gold Stars, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy-Marine Corps Commendation Medal with Combat Distinguishing Device and one Gold Star, Navy-Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Army Achievement Medal, and Combat Action Ribbon with one Gold Star.
