Captain Jim Cody
Chief of Staff

Captain Jim Cody is a New York native. Cody graduated from the United States Naval Academy with the class of 1987 with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering. Following graduation he completed nuclear power training prior to entering the fleet as a Surface Warfare officer.

Captain Cody has served in Aircraft Carriers, Cruisers, Destroyers, and Frigates in both the Atlantic and Pacific Fleets.

In his initial sea duty assignment from 1989 to 1991, Captain Cody served as Communications Officer in USS DAVID R RAY(DD 971), participating in both DESERT SHIELD and DESERT STORM. Subsequent assignments at sea include Chemistry/Radiological Controls Assistant and Electrical Officer in USS TRUXTUN (CGN 35), Chemistry/Radiological Controls Assistant in USS ENTERPRISE (CVN 65), and Combat Systems Officer in USS BRISCOE (DD 977).

Captain Cody served as executive Officer in USS KAUFFMAN (FFG 59) from 2001 to 2002, Chief Staff Officer on the staff of COMMANDER DESTROYER SQUADRON 26 from 2002 to 2003, and as the commissioning Reactor Officer on USS GEORGE H W BUSH (CVN 77) from 2008 to 2010. He commanded USS ROBERT G BRADLEY (FFG 49) from 2006 to 2007.

Ashore, Captain Cody has served as the Sophomore Instructor at the Pennsylvania State University NROTC Unit, as a branch chief in the Joint Experimentation Directorate at Joint Forces Command, as Deputy Assistant Chief of Staff for Nuclear Propulsion on the staff of Commander Naval Air Forces Atlantic, and as the Assistant Chief of Staff for Operations and Plans on the staff of Commander Naval Surfaces Forces Atlantic.

Captain Cody holds a master’s degree in Environmental Pollution Control from Pennsylvania State University and has completed joint service officer training and is designated a JSO. His awards include the Legion of Merit, the Meritorious Service Medal with 3 gold stars, the Joint Commendation Medal, the Navy Commendation Medal with 4 gold stars, the Navy Achievement Medal and numerous campaign and unit level awards.
