NAVSEA Recognized for Top Support to Small Business — Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) received six of 13 awards for outstanding acquisition practices during the 2014 Department of the Navy Acquisition Excellence Awards ceremony at the Pentagon, Nov. 17. Key among the awards presented by Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Acquisition Sean Stackley and Chief of Naval Operations Adm. John Richardson was the award presented to NAVSEA's small business associate director, Sarkis Tatigian.

'Desperate Act of Trust': US, Allies Recall, Renew Scientific Ties — In the somber wake of recent attacks in Paris, three World War II allies honored decades of defense-critical scientific collaboration and re-affirmed their partnership for years to come. On Nov. 17, at the Embassy of Canada in Washington, D.C., the U.S. Office of Naval Research, the British Embassy and the Canadian Embassy co-hosted a one-day, 75th-anniversary commemoration of the Tizard Mission, a pivotal moment of transatlantic political cooperation and scientific collaboration that contributed to Allied Victory in World War II.

Diversity Council Fosters Inclusive Work Environment — The Naval Surface Warfare Center Panama City Division (NSWC PCD) Diversity Council (DC) works to promote awareness and provide resources for employees to integrate diversity initiatives throughout the workforce. Special Emphasis Program Manager (SEPM) Pete Hamilton said the council members have backgrounds as diverse as the special emphasis areas with which they are tasked.

Service Member Donations Help Save More than 13,000 Lives — Donating blood is a gift that can have an immediate impact on whether someone lives or dies. For service members at Naval Station Great Lakes, those donations during the past year were celebrated during a luncheon hosted by LifeSource, Nov. 18.

Truman 1st Carrier to Install Navy's Afloat Fab Lab — Mid-Atlantic Regional Maintenance Center (MARMC) and Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) installed the Navy's first afloat mini Fabrication Laboratory (Fab Lab) aboard the carrier, Nov. 13. Truman Maintenance Officer Cmdr. Al Palmer and MARMC Commanding Officer Capt. Steven Stancy met for the delivery and installation of the mini Fab Lab.

Oceanographer of the Navy Testifies on Capitol Hill Regarding Arctic Operations — Oceanographer of the Navy Rear Adm. Tim Gallaudet testified regarding Navy Arctic operations to the House Committee on Foreign Affairs' (HCFA) Subcommittee on Europe, Eurasia and Emerging Threats and the HCFA Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere, Nov. 17, in the Rayburn House Office Building.

NAWCWD Vice Commander Helps Welcome The Wall That Heals to California — The Vietnam Memorial in Washington, D.C., honors over 58,000 service members who died in service to their nation. In November a mobile, half-scale version of the memorial, known as The Wall That Heals, came to the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California.

NRL Researchers Recruit Luminescent Nanoparticles to Image Brain Function — Research biologists, chemists and theoreticians at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), are on pace to develop the next generation of functional materials that could enable the mapping of the complex neural connections in the brain. The ultimate goal is to better understand how the billions of neurons in the brain communicate with one another during normal brain function, or dysfunction, as a result of injury or disease.

Marine Corps Harriers from USS Kearsarge Join Fight Against ISIL — Naval Aviation rejoined the fight against ISIL Nov. 19 when AV-8B Harriers from Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron (VMM)162(Reinforced)launched from the amphibious assault ship USS Kearsarge (LHD 3) to conduct their first missions over Iraq in support of Operation Inherent Resolve (OIR).

With the increase of cyber threats across the globe, the Navy is hardening another weapons system essential for effective operations: its information technology networks, both afloat and ashore.
