The Privacy Impact Assessment (PIA) is a tool for assessing privacy risks in an information technology system. Federal and Department of Defense guidance regarding PIAs helps ensure that personally identifiable information (PII) in electronic form is only collected, maintained and disseminated when necessary, and that the supporting IT systems being developed and used protect and preserve the privacy of the American public. This memo expands the Federal and DoD requirement to also cover Department of the Navy civilian and military personnel. By extending the PIA requirement, the DON demonstrates its commitment to supporting the warfighters in every aspect of their operations.
