NAVAL AIR STATION NORTH ISLAND, CA – For the fourth consecutive time, Fleet Readiness Center Southwest (FRCSW) recently earned re-certification for International Organization for Standards (ISO) 14-001.
The ISO 14-001 goal is to help organizations improve environmental awareness and performance, and prevent pollution.
In 1999, FRCSW became the first federal facility to register to the ISO 14-001. The command adheres to the 14-001 specifications for use in its environmental management system (EMS) which strives to achieve continual improvement within its environmental performance.
Organizations registered to the ISO 14-001 are regularly audited to monitor and document environmental improvements and performances.
At FRCSW, external ISO 14-001 audits are held once every six months. Audits may target any of the 17 elements of the standard including environmental policy, emergency preparedness and response, operational control, communications, legal, documentation control and management review.
Advantages to ISO 14-001 registration include improved environmental compliance and pollution prevention, greater environmental awareness among employees and reduced environmental operating costs.
