Anytime is a Great Time to Visit a U.S. Naval Museum

While you are out and about, plan to visit the naval museums administrated by the U.S. Naval History and Heritage Command. Click on the links below to plan your visit. See if you can visit them all!

National Museum of the U.S. Navy (NMUSN), Washington, D.C. You will find programs designed specifically for children, families and naval enthusiasts of all ages.

National Naval Aviation Museum (NNAM), Pensacola, Florida -- is the world’s largest Naval Aviation museum and one of the most-visited museums in the state of Florida. Share the excitement of Naval Aviation’s rich history and see more than 150 beautifully restored aircraft representing Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard Aviation. These historic and one-of-a-kind aircraft are displayed both inside the Museum’s nearly 350,000 square feet of exhibit space and outside on its 37-acre grounds.

Hampton Roads Naval Museum, (HRNM), Norfolk, Virginia
-- August 17-19: 15th Annual Chief Petty Officer Heritage Days co-ed with Nauticus. Chief candidates have opportunity to learn about their CPO heritage and understand the true meaning behind the U.S. Navy’s mission, vision, guiding principles, and core values — honor, courage and commitment. This year HRNM will host 750 selectees over the three-day period. This has grown from one day for 250 selectees 15 years ago.

Naval War College Museum, (NWCM) Newport, Rhode Island
-- Jul-Jan: NWCM is closed for a six-month renovation The museum’s HVAC system will be replaced with a more modern system to ensure a more stable environmental climate to preserve the treasured historical artifacts on exhibit. Plans are to reopen Jan. 4, 2016.
-- Aug – Sept: Lou Reda Film Production Crew conducts Documentary at NWC Museum. Naval War College Museum hosted Lou Reda Film Production crew as they were gathering information on an upcoming project on Commodore Matthew C. Perry and the Black Ships. In another project, a documentary concerning the Sunken sub U-853 is being conducted and the Naval War College Museum will host the film crew for some B-Roll footage for use during the dive on the wreck. The project on the sunken sub is projected to be filmed in September.

Naval Submarine Force Museum, (NSFM), and HS Nautilus, Groton, Connecticut
-- Aug 7-8: Battleship New Jersey's Ham Radio Commemoration of their transit trip.

U.S. Navy SEABEE Museum (UNSM), Port Hueneme, California
-- Aug: Junior Seabee Day

National Museum of the American Sailor (NMAS), Great Lakes, Illinois
-- Aug 15: Care and Preservation of Textiles, Preservation Lecture Series #3 Museum Collection Manager, Ms.Kari Atkinson, presents workshop to show simple techniques for textile preservation including boxing, rolling, or hanging; proper storage materials; methods of cleaning; and when to call a professional conservator.
-- Aug 21: Great Lakes Naval Museum Summer Concert Series - Navy Band Great Lakes

Naval Undersea Museum (NUM), Keyport, Washington
-- CNN Documentary about Trieste II (DSV-1) Recovery Operation. The Central Intelligence Agency is partnering with CNN to create a one-hour documentary piece about a 1972 secret operation the CIA declassified in late. The mission-required use of Navy submersible Trieste II (DSV-1), on permanent display at NUM, as the only U.S. vessel capable of operating to 16,400 feet to recover valuable film negatives lost during recovery. CNN will feature NUM in the program and film several mission participants onsite in NUM's exhibit galleries. Filming is tentatively planned for early August.

Puget Sound Navy Museum , (PSNM) Bremerton, Washington
-- Jul-Sep: Set SAIL Fridays Set SAIL (Science, Art, and Interactive Learning), from 10AM – 2PM, is an educational program that introduces kids and their families to many topics related to the museum's exhibits. It includes a featured activity and a selection of water activities, face painting, construction activities, button making , and more.

U.S. Naval Academy Museum , (USNAM), Annapolis, Maryland
-- The Naval Academy Art Collection contains more than 1200 paintings and pieces of sculpture representing the work of many notable artists. Among the artists whose works are represented in the collection are Michel F. Corn, Robert Salmon, Edward Savage, Gilbert Stuart, John Wesley Jarvis, Thomas Sully, N.C. Wyeth, and the sculptors Jean Antoine Houdon and Felix DeWeldon. The subjects are primarily naval ships, battles, and portraits. Often the paintings are contemporary with the ships or events that they depict, which adds historical interest to their artistic value.
-- Sep 2015: New Exhibit planned: “Warrior-Writers: The U.S. Naval Institute.” An exhibit of the history of the U.S. Naval Institute which was founded by a group of officers at the Naval Academy in 1873 that demonstrates the influence of writing about the sea services. One hundred military personnel and civilians who have written for Proceedings, Naval History, Naval Institute Press or elsewhere will be featured.
