The 101 critical days of summer are here. Motorcycle enthusiasts are popping up all over the place as temperatures rise across the country.
I ponder on how to define a safe rider. I strive to ride within my limits both physically and mentally, encourage the safest alternatives regarding personal protective gear and manage and accept the least amount of risk. I became a motorcycle enthusiast about seven years ago. My neighbor in Okinawa, Japan, was always bike-sitting for different deployed Airmen, so there was a constant presence of motorcycles in our carport.

When I think about being a good Airman first, there are two quotes that have framed my focus.
The first came from Chief Master Sgt. A.C. Smith, who is the command chief master sergeant for the 388th Fighter Wing at Hill Air Force Base, Utah. It was part of his address to the Team Hill 5/6 Association, and I was attending as the president of Hill’s Top 3. He said:
“I was 19 years old when I got into the Air Force. I was 32 when the Air Force got into me.”

Imagine working on something worth approximately $60 million and being responsible for the safety of another person’s life. For the crew chiefs of the 5th Reconnaissance Squadron at Osan Air Base, Republic of Korea, that’s just another day at work as they repair and maintain U-2 Dragon Ladies to ensure the squadron’s pilots can safely complete their reconnaissance and surveillance missions.

“Grow where you’re planted.” These words can create sudden tension and dampen the mood of any mentorship opportunity. To many, it’s an admonishment to toe the line and do the job they’ve been told to do. It is also preceived as an indication that their professional desires are not important, and proof that their leadership is out of touch with their abilities and needs.
