1 The date of issue for Private Stayer's award is listed as 22 May 1862 in the U.S. Senate Committee on Veterans' Affairs Report, Medal of Honor Recipients: 1863-1978, the original source for these online citations. Obviously this date must be incorrect given the date of service for the award is 1872. Two previous editions of the Senate Report from 1973 and 1963 also carry the typographical error of 1862. However, the 1948 The Medal of Honor volume, published by the Army at the direction of the President, shows the date of issue for Private Strayer's award as 22 May 1872- and that date is now used here in this online citation.
