MWR, CYP Facilities Experience Duplicate Charges

YOKOSUKA, Japan (NNS) – Customers at Navy Region Japan’s Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) and Child and Youth Program (CYP) facilities may have recently experienced duplicate debit and credit card charges due to a computer system error.

A system update began on Saturday, Sept. 24 but was stopped the next day when some customers noticed erroneous charges. CNIC Treasury has identified all the erroneous charges and has notified Bank of America, which is in the process of reversing the charges.

The issue involved a software update.  There is no evidence of large scale hacking or identity theft. Customers do not need to take any action to have their accounts refunded.  Customers should be fully refunded in the next few days.

I would like to take a moment to talk about Atsugi crew andMWR gym staff. I've never been to a Cammand like this. Every time I go to the gyms here on base they are always full. The crew here are a bunch of gym rats in a good way, even on Sunday the gym is full. You have to love it. I hear scuttle buds about they are going to close the small gym. Big mistake unless the are going to make a bigger one to replace it. If that's the case please do not shut it down until the new one is ready. Be to the MWR staff

Is it possible to get an update to this situation? It has now been a week and we haven't heard anything. Is there a phone number we can contact, or anyway we can get some additional information?

When can we see the charges taken off our credit cards? So far...they are still there and it has been more than a few days. Who is going to pay the interest on these charges?

Will Navy Federal be refunding the Overdraft Fees due to the computer system error?

"A glitch"?
The lack of communication, information, basic customer service and support from all the parties involved is appalling (i.e., CNIC, MWR, Bank of America, Navy Federal etc...). Total and blatant incompetency with no responsibility taken. Absolutely scandalous and worrisome.

Per CNRJ post on Facebook:

According to CNIC, work with the banks first, but if they refuse to reverse charges which obviously weren't your fault, the Navy will pay them. We encourage you to contact CNIC through their hotline at (844) 697-4357 or email mwr_creditcard_FAQ.fct@navy.mil

I am not affected by this.

However, have some empathy man. First, you dont know peoples situations. Second, for some people these charges were in the thousands.

Dont be a jerk and holler and say people should just have more money for when they are unknowingly charged hundreds to thousands of dollars.

I dont even have access quickly (within hours) to the bulk of my saved money as it immediately gets invested.

I do carry a credit card for emergencies on larger than a grand scale.

So say it happened to be that card that was affected and needed to be replaced, I might be a little SOL for a couple days.

Just next time, dont act all high and mighty. Empathize. Realize everyone's situation is different.

Unfortunately some banks went into the savings accounts of people to cover the thousands of dollars charged. So all of the money people had saved for an emergency situation, was taken by the bank to cover the checking. I had over $3000 taken out and a friend of mine had over $6000. You can't always be prepared for a glitch that causes thousands to come out of your account.

I want accountability! That everyone fired! I'm not talking about lower level personnel either! This is disgusting! Not only are we away from any type of family support but you are stuck in this situation! I've been crying as well as other families! I have automatic college loans. Who is going no to pay for that!? I want bodies and I want them now! Yet, no one o face us!

Because no one cares about us. It's not their $3,000 or even $7,000. They give you financial training about emergency fund. That's there part. But if you owe the government a penny they take you from right then.

So what do families do in the mean time when they can't afford to pay for diapers and essential items needed for our families? What about all of our bills that are set for auto pay and have now been returned for NSF? What about those sailors who live off base who have rent or mortgages and other bills that are due that are now being returned due to NSF and all the fees assigned by local merchants due to returned checks?
